First round win

What a gorgeous day for baseball at the Spokane Fairgrounds! Bright blue skies, a light, steady breeze and a warm but comfortable temperature at immaculate Avista Stadium welcomed Lakeside fans as they watched their undefeated Eagles beat a rugged Cascade team 11 to 5 with solid pitching and powerful hitting in the first round of the NEA/CTL bi-district baseball regional tournament Tuesday afternoon.

Highlights included starting pitcher Anthony Froemke's 3 triples in his first 3 trips to the plate, triples by Gilrein and Stillar, and towering doubles by Corigliano, Richards and Graham. Froemke earned the win to move his mark to 7-0 on the season. Lakeside also had a perfect fielding effort as Cascade struggled with 5 errors, many behind the plate, which handed the Eagles several unearned runs throughout the course of the 6 1/2 inning game.

The second round game for the winner of this NEA 1 vs. CTL 4 game was treacherously scheduled to follow immediately at its conclusion, and Lakeside, even though the number 1 seed and host team, was forced to play its first two bi-district games back to back. Chewelah, the number 3 seed from the NEA, beat CTL's #2 seed Okanogan earlier in the day. Having been spotted a first round 11:00 am start time, various Cougars could be seen lounging about the stadium enjoying the unusual scouting opportunity all during the Lakeside/Cascade contest, which didn't get started until well after 2.

Despite the scheduling disadvantage, the Eagles battled on through the fatigue and led the well-rested Chewelah team 3-1 through five full innings. In the sixth, the Cougars, who Lakeside had beaten 3 for 3 and blanked twice by scores of 10-0 and 8-0 during the regular season, were able to tie the score with 2 runs, but the Eagles kept the score knotted at 3-3 through the seventh frame, sending the game into extra innings.

Things looked bleak after the top half of the eighth, as Chewelah threatened the big upset, scoring three runs to go up 6-3. Digging deep, the Eagles matched those runs, and again knotted the score at 6-6 to end the eighth.

Unfortunately, the Cougars were able to squeak out two more runs in the top of the ninth, and the valiant Eagles simply ran out of gas. Despite out-hitting their opponent 12-9, and committing zero fielding errors to Chewelah's 4, the state's number 1 ranked 1A team, previously undefeated, lost the second round bi-district game 6-8 after nine full innings, and was shown the door to the consolation bracket with their first loss of the season, dropping their overall 2007 season record to 20-1.

With the win, Chewelah is already guaranteed at least a number 2 seed from District 6/7 to state, while Lakeside now faces a loser out game tomorrow in Moses Lake at 5:00 pm against the winner of the Omak/Colfax game at 1. Should the Eagles win that game, they would face a battle for the third seed on Saturday, May 19th, loser #4 to state.

GO EAGLES.
