Boys slighted at Bullpup; win small school anyway
Lakeside Coach Steve Olson sprang into action when the counting mistake was discovered, bravely boarding the Colville High School team bus to retrieve the winner's trophy rightfully belonging to his own squad as it was about to drive off with the booty.
Lakeside Sr Josh Alexander was properly awarded the 7th place individual medal, as he out-paced all Lakeside runners with a time of 17:11. Sr Austin Stuchell was the second Eagle to cross the line, coming in 11th overall with a time of 17:17 and missing out on a medallion by 1 second to Colville's second finisher, Ned Fischer, in a case of turn about fair play. Josh had beaten the first Colville runner, Jake Hastings, also by just 1 second. Mt Spokane's Allan Schroeder won the race with a time of 16:21.
Sr Paul Lewis finished 27th out of 144 varsity boys with a time of 17:43, followed by So Colton Berry (32nd - 17:52), So Ryan Rojeski (48th - 18:22), Jr Craig Besel (56th - 18:44) and Sr Chris Thompson (77th - 19:22).
Lakeside boys finished the varsity meet with 125 points, to 2A Colville's 138 and 2A Riverside's 142. A host of other small schools came in with scores ranging from Reardan's 331 to Potlach's 677, including Lakeside's fellow NEA league members Freeman (332) and Newport (493).
The Lakeside boys came in 5th overall, behind regional powerhouses 3A Mt Spokane (1st overall with 77 points), 4A Gonzaga Prep (2nd - 81), 4A Central Valley (3rd - 98) and 5A (ID) Coeur d'Alene (4th - 100). The three top big school teams were awarded trophies, while only 1st and 2nd place trophies were awarded in the small school category.
Varsity girls, who placed 6th overall, would have brought home the third place trophy in the small school category had there been one, as they came in with 141 points behind Riverside's 84, good for 2nd place overall, and Colville's 92, good for 3rd place overall. Central Valley came in 1st overall, while Coeur d'Alene was 4th with 94 and Gonzaga Prep was 5th with 123. NEA member Freeman was 9th with 292 points, despite the Scotties' Mackenzie DeRuyter taking home the 8th place individual medal.
Coeur d'Alene's Kinsey Gomez showed her defending Idaho state 5A championship form in running away from the rest of the field early in the contest, coming in at 19:19, 1 minute 9 seconds faster than Alicia Doohan, the second place finisher from Gonzaga Prep.
Jr Evangeline Rehwaldt once again led all Lakeside varsity girl runners, crossing the line 13th overall with a time of 21:28. The second Lakeside finisher out of 89 runners, So Hailee Ramsey, came in 20th, with a time of 21:53, followed by Sr Gina Sprint (26th - 22:33), So Kasey Rubosky (40th - 23:17), Jr Tasha Britton (42nd - 23:19), Fr Morganne McCann (43rd - 23:23) and Fr Vanessa Ahrendt (47th - 23:30). After crossing the finish line behind two Riverside runners, Vanessa insisted, "I would have passed them (on the final sprint), but the (second) one moved over and cut me off." Jr varsity girls finished 4th overall (out of 8) with 172 points, behind Central Valley (34 points), Coeur d'Alene Charter (73) and Gonzaga Prep (89), while also beating the enormous jv contingent from Lewis & Clark (5th - 234) by 62 points. JV boys placed 12th overall (out of 15) with 436 points.
Jimmy Spencer placed 29th out of 74 runners with a time of 13:03 as the only Lakeside Eagle entered in the 2 mile Freshman boys race, while lone Eagle Paris Hochhalter came in 24th out of 41 runners with a time of 16:46 in the Freshman girls race.
