Newport tops Lakeside in volleyball marathon

The Lakeside varsity volleyball team ended up on the losing side of a 5 set match against Newport last night at home, but remains in first place in league play with a 6-1 record. The Lady Eagles are now 8-4 overall going into their final match of the regular season against second place Freeman tonight on the road. Freeman is 5-1 in league, 6-6 overall after falling to 2B dominator and former NEA member Colfax Monday night in 3 straight sets, 11-25, 13-25 and 12-25.

Lakeside made Newport earn the win, taking the first set 25-23 and controlling the second 25-15. Newport roared back, taking the next two 25-20 and 25-21. Newport then sealed the match with the tie breaker fifth set, 15-10.

With a win tonight, Lakeside can still clinch the NEA league title with a 7-1 record. Freeman, with a loss tonight, could do no better than 6-2 to finish the season, should they then beat Chewelah in their final game Thursday night. With a Lakeside loss tonight, Freeman would control their own destiny, leaving Lakeside at their mercy -- a following Freeman loss at Chewelah would result in a tie for 1st place between Lakeside and Freeman at 6-2, but a following win at Chewelah would make Freeman the league champ at 7-1.

Good luck, Lakeside Lady Eagles!
