Lakeside Volleyball FIRST in League, Districts
After winning the NEA league championship just a week and a half before, the Lakeside varsity volleyball team traveled to West Valley High School on a quest to earn themselves a district title as well. First up were the Grizzlies from Newport. The last time the Lady Eagles met the Grizzlies, they were given their first league defeat. Lakeside was not going to allow a repeat. The Eagles came out swinging with revenge in sight and won the match in three games with scores of 25-19, 25-14, and 25-22. Cami Alexander led the Eagles with 10 kills and a block, Leslie Stillar had 6 digs and 2 serving aces, and Lexie Zappone headed up the assists category with 16. Lakeside now advanced to the district title game against the winner of the Freeman vs. Kettle Falls district match.
Much like the league championship match a week and a half before, it was a Freeman vs. Lakeside match up in the district title game. The Eagles took advantage of the Scotties’ mistakes in the first game and got the win 25-21. Freeman proved to want it just as much as they came back with numerous kills and blocks from Freeman middle Carley Heinen and won the second game of the match 22-25. Lakeside capitalized on large momentum late in the third game to pull out an exciting 28-26 win. Freeman wasn’t going without a fight. They took advantage of Lakeside’s mistakes early and never looked back as they knocked off the Eagles 20-25 in the fourth game, sending the championship match into a deciding fifth game. This title game proved to be as exciting as ever as the Scotties and Eagles played neck-and-neck throughout most of the game. The Lady Eagles were down 7-11 at one point and decided it was time to turn it around. They tied it up at 11-11.Each team traded points from there to a 15-15 tie. After a hitting error by Freeman, the Lady Eagles were up 16-15 with match point. With a Lakeside kill for the final point, the Lady Eagles were district champions. Cami Alexander led again in kills with 14, Alexander and Alex Daggy both had 2 blocks a piece, and Lexie Zappone had 24 assists. Sara Moffatt and Leslie Stillar both chipped in 17 digs, with Stillar and Zappone also serving up two aces. The Lady Eagles earned themselves an impressive district title. Congratulations girls!
Please plan on cheering on the Eagles at the District 6/7 Volleyball Regionals in Moses Lake this coming Saturday, November 8th at 11:00.
