Lakeside Volleyball Takes 9th at State
The Eagles headed to Yakima to achieve their final goal of the season. They had accomplished their other three goals: to win the NEA League Title, District Title, and win a state berth at Regionals.
The Eagles were scheduled to play Cascade Christian Academy in their first match at State. The Eagles started off slowly and dropped the first set 22-25. The Eagles roared back and captured the second set 25-16. It looked like the team was starting to get into their rhythm, but they never could get to full stride. They dropped the third set 18-25 and then dropped the fourth set 12-25. Leslie Stillar led the Eagles with 14 kills, 2 aces, and 10 digs. Sara Moffatt added 13 digs. Cami Alexander led in the assist column with 18. Alexander, Alex Daggy, and Brandi Mahoney each had three blocks. Mahoney also served 14 for 14 on her serves.
The Eagles were sent into the consolation bracket and that set them up against Connell. The Eagles were out to seek revenge because Connell beat them in a quarterfinal match last year at the State Tournament. This year was a new story. The Eagles swept them in three straight sets, 25-11, 25-18, 25 -20.. Cami Alexander led the team with 3 blocks, 11 kills, and 2 aces, and Leslie Stillar chipped in 10 digs.
The team needed one more win to make it into a trophy match. The Eagles knew it would be a tough one because it would be against Goldendale, the number-2-ranked team in the state. The Eagles found themselves down 10-19 in the first set. They fought back but eventually lost 20-25. The second set was another battle. The Eagles were up 16-7 let the lead slip away as Goldendale came back swinging. The second set went to Goldendale 23-25. Lakeside won the third game 25-19, but Goldendale came back again and won the fourth game 18-25, earning the match win. Leslie Stillar had 11 kills, Heather Hesselgesser and Sara Moffatt had 12 digs, and Alex Daggy added 5 blocks. The Eagles would have to settle for 9th place.
When the last ball fell I was preparing a speech in my head about winning and losing, but as we huddled in the corner of the Sundome, I realized that the tears on their faces were not tears about winning or losing but were tears about the ending of a team - a team that grew together and became one of the most cohesive teams in Lakeside volleyball history. I told them that they were the biggest winners of them all. Not many teams get to ever experience the true meaning of team like this team did.
Congratulations on your many successes throughout the season!
