Lakeside Girls Basketball Falls One Game Short of State

The Lakeside girls’ basketball team completed its 2008-09 season falling one game short of the 1A state tournament after falling to CTL rival Chelan last week. With the new Regional format that qualified only 3 teams from the District 6/7 region, the Eagles had to fight their way through some stiff competition. Though they ultimately did not reach their goal of returning to state this year, they had a successful season full of some great highlights.
After completing the regular season finishing 2nd in the NE”A” league, the Eagles came up short against a very hot Newport squad at the District tournament. This put them into a loser out game vs. Kettle Falls, with the winner qualifying to move into the Regional tournament. Led by the stellar play of Leslie Stillar and Lexie Zappone, the Eagles ran by the Bulldogs from Kettle Falls, setting up a rematch with Newport for the #2 seed from the league. In a heart-breaking, close game defeat to Newport a few days later, the Eagles secured a berth to Regionals as the #3 seed, ready to take on CTL #2 seed, Tonasket.
With hard work, focus, and solid practices, the team prepared for Tonasket, a tough opponent with only 4 losses on their record. In one of the best defensive performances on the year, Lakeside eliminated Tonasket from the tournament with a solid 44-36 win. This propelled them into the Regional semi-finals versus their league rival and highly ranked Freeman Scotties. Pushing Freeman to the limit, the Eagles fell a little short again, losing by 10.
With CTL league champion on the horizon in a winner-to-state/loser out game the following night, the girls knew they had to play a good game and work hard in order to move on to the next level of play. Fighting a tough battle early on, Lakeside held a slight lead after one quarter. But then the Eagles went cold from the floor, only shooting 20% for the rest of the game, as Chelan moved in the opposite direction, shooting a blistering 52% for the final three quarters, defeating the Eagles and ending their season.
“I am proud of how the girls worked and gave so much to the team. Basketball can be intense and full of immediate emotion and the team learned a lot this season. Hopefully the girls will have a hunger and desire to improve in the off-season to help us get back to state and compete for a trophy next year,” commented Coach Jeff Pietz
Despite the finality to the season, the Lakeside Girls basketball team had a solid season. They worked hard and played some of the toughest teams in the state. Thank you to all the fans, parents, and community for the support over the season.
With a solid group of returning players, the Eagles look to get back to state in 2010!
