Lady Eagles take 5th place at State

STATE VOLLEYBALL 2009

The Lady Eagles earned the first seed to state at the district playoffs on Saturday, November 7th , by winning the district championship. The State draw was on Sunday, November 8th. The Eagles got a very tough draw, and their bracket was the most difficult. Their first match was against King’s, last year’s State Champion and this year’s predicted State Champion. King’s had faltered in their regional playoffs against Annie Wright and earned a lower seed to state.
The match up proved to be too much for the Lady Eagles. Kings swept the Eagles, three sets to 0, and eventually were crowned the State Champions after winning the State Tournament.
The Eagles had to battle back through the loser’s bracket to earn a trophy. They could not lose again, or they would go home empty-handed. The highest place that Lakeside could take was fifth. The loss to King’s set them up against Granger. Granger was also a state-ranked team. The Eagles were tough, trying to rebound after their loss to King’s. The Eagles swept Granger in three sets. The scores were 25-7, 25-23, and 25-23. Alex Daggy led with 16 kills, and Leslie Stillar was right behind her with 15 kills. Lexie Zappone led defensively with 14 digs, with Grace Stillar right behind her with 13. Lauryn Bassen added 33 assists and 3 kills.
The next match placed them against Connell. This match determined who would play for the 5th and 8th places. The Eagles came out tough and determined. They swept Connell in three sets, 25-19, 26-24, and 25-19. Leslie Stillar had 15 kills and 8 digs. Katie Whiteside and Alex Daggy added 8 kills each. Lauryn Bassen contributed 34 assists, and Lexie Zappone added 9 digs. The Eagles would play for the 5th – place and 8th place trophies.
The stage was set; they were to play Annie Wright. Annie Wright was also a state- ranked team that had beaten King’s in their regional playoff.
The Eagles played like champions: playing with heart, determination, and guts. Things that we had worked on all season long had come together in the last two weeks, and they were playing their best volleyball right when they should. I couldn’t have been prouder as a coach.
The Eagles won the first two sets against Annie Wright 25-19, and 25-10. In the third set they had been down a bit, but had captured the momentum again. They had cruised ahead, and Lauryn Bassen was serving for a string of points when something very unfortunate happened. The scorekeeper called the Eagles “out of rotation.” They knew they were not, but after a ten-minute delay, the scorekeeper realized that she had made an error, but her error became detrimental for the Eagles. When the Eagles returned to the floor, the scorekeeper had changed the score; now the Eagles were losing the set instead of being ahead by three. The Eagles tried to point out her error and even tried to provide her with correct statistical proof of the score but she refused to listen. This three-point error became crucial. If the scorekeeper would have had the correct score, the Eagles would have won the trophy 25-22 in the third set. They ended up losing the third set 24-26, knowing that they had truly won the fifth-place trophy long before it had reached that point. This was mentally devastating for the Eagles. They struggled in the 4th set and lost. They tried to battle back in the fifth set but eventually lost the fifth set 13-15. The error by the scorekeeper was later confirmed by video tape, but WIAA said there was nothing they could do about it. The Eagles had to settle for the 8th - place trophy and just know in their hearts that they had earned fifth place.
The Lady Eagles had a tremendous year. After “truly” only losing to the eventual State Champions at the State Tournament, and sweeping all of their competitors in three sets, working their way through the loser’s bracket was a tough feat. What a great season they had. Congratulations to the Lakeside Volleyball Team for their successful season!

Volleyball falls to eventual champion in 1st round to end 8th in state

5th place is the best a team can hope for after losing in the first round of the 1A state volleyball tournament. Unfortunately, the first round saw the Lakeside Lady Eagles paired with the eventual state champions King's team, which swept everyone 3-0 up to the championship game, where it defeated Caribou Trail League member Chelan 3-1 for their 1 and 2 finishes. Chelan had also swept its first 3 opponents 3-0.

Lakeside swept Granger and Connell 3-0 in its next two games to get into the fight for 5th, but fell to Annie Wright 3-2 after a 13-15 heartbreaking tie-breaker loss to end the 2009 state tournament in 8th place. The Lady Eagles dominated AW in the first two games 25-19 and 25-10, but lost a very tough game 26-24, ran out of gas to lose the next game 25-13 to tie the match score at 2-2, re-grouped to fight hard but could not pull out the win in the first to 15 tie-breaker.
Freeman ended its state run in 7th place after beating Royal 3-0 in the first round, but falling to Montesano in the second.

Despite the disappointing placing, it really was a great state run with some very impressive wins along the way.

Lakeside XC boys and girls both take 4th place at state!

After seeing several key seniors from last year's 1A state championship team graduate last spring, the Lakeside cross country boys returned to the podium at the 2009 state meet last Saturday, November 4th to accept a 4th place trophy after a strong follow up race by a young group of harriers.

The Lady Eagles cross country team also won a 4th place trophy, repeating their achievement of a year ago, which was the first state placing of any girls' cross country team at Lakeside in its history. Only the top 4 XC teams take home a trophy from the state meet.

The boys were paced by junior Colton Berry, who finished 10th overall in 17:01, followed by junior Ryan Rojeski (20 17:30), senior Craig Besel (43 18:00), senior Kyle Koch (63 18:22) and freshman Cody Constant (81 18:39). Junior Kyle Stout and freshman Mitchell Middleton bolstered the Lakeside effort.

Nooksack Valley won the 1A boys team title, followed by Port Townsend and Seattle Christian.

Senior XC newcomer Kenna Middleton led the Lady Eagles, coming in an amazing 4th overall in 19:48 (missing the National Silver Elite standard by only :03 secs!). She was followed by senior veteran Evangeline Rehwaldt (15 20:36), 2008 state 1st alternate sophomore Vanessa Ahrendt (26 21:20), freshman Sofie Marikis (63 22:24) and sophomore veteran Morganne McCann (69 22:37). The team points earners were supported by seniors Kendra Lahue and Jenny Reeder.

Needless to say, both Lakeside girls and boys finished the final 1A coaches' poll ranked 4th in the state.

Lady Eagles are ON TO STATE!

The Lakeside Eagle volleyball team celebrated the high school careers of eight seniors on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. The seniors included Lauryn Bassen and Leslie Stillar (captains) Ashley Durrance, Chelsey Johnson, Alex Daggy, Amy Juran, Katie Whiteside, and Pam Seitz. These young ladies were recognized and honored for their commitment, hard work, and dedication to the volleyball program. Their last match on their home court did not turn out how they wanted. They met the Newport Grizzlies. Newport was undefeated and League Champions. The Eagles had many opportunities to take over the match but lost in four games. The scores were 22-25, 25-19, 22-25, and 20-25. Lauryn Bassen led the Eagles with 33 assists, 3 blocks, and 1 ace. Alex Daggy added 15 kills, and Grace Stillar had 12 digs and 1 ace.

The Eagles finished the season tied for second place with Freeman. They met Freeman in the first round of play-offs on Saturday, November 7. The Eagles stormed into districts starting the district play-offs with Katie Whiteside serving 12 unanswered points. The Eagles swept Freeman in three games; 25-8, 25-21, 25-14. Leslie Stillar and Alex Daggy racked up 15 kills a piece. Lauryn Bassen added 29 assists and 4 aces. In the defensive column, Leslie Stillar and Lexie Zappone each had 1 block. Grace Stillar and Alex Daggy led with 8 digs a piece.

The Eagles victory set them up for the District Championship. They met the Newport Grizzlies one more time. The Lady Eagles barreled out to an early lead, and the Grizzlies did not know how to respond. The tremendous blocking at the net frustrated the Newport hitters. It was a battle to the finish, with the Eagles never letting up. The Eagles won the first two games 25-19, 25-20. The third game was quite a battle. The Grizzlies took a quick lead, but put up a fight with every point. The Grizzlies were ahead 24–19 when Katie Whiteside stepped up to the serving line. Knowing that one point, one mistake, would be the game, and take the match into a fourth game, the Eagles never gave up. Katie was clutch, and so was the whole team. They won the next eight consecutive points, took the District Championship, and won the first seed to State. Leslie Stillar had 8 kills and 10 digs. Alex Daggy contributed 7 kills, 4 blocks, and 6 digs; Savannah Rolston added 12 digs. Lauryn Bassen had 22 assists and 2 aces. Katie Whiteside added two very important aces. The team had 9 blocks against Newport. CONGRATULATIONS LAKESIDE VOLLEYBALL!

The Lady Eagles Begin League Play

Fresh after a much-anticipated game that resulted in a HUGE win against the Colfax Bulldogs, their long-time rivals, the Eagles had their first league match. After a big break between the matches, the Lady Eagles were excited for the game on September 24. The Eagles met Chewelah at home. The Eagles had a slow start and were plagued by hitting errors. They found themselves down 8-0 in the first game. After the Eagles took a quick time-out to regroup, they roared back winning the first set 25-18. Their tough serving game, and their change in hitting strategy changed the momentum of the match. They won the second set 25-14. Katie Whiteside started the third set with 17 consecutive serves, 4 of those serves being aces. The final set was 25-10. What a way to start league play! Leslie Stillar racked up 15 kills and 14 digs. Lauryn Bassen fed the hitters with 31 assists, and Alex Daggy added 4 blocks to frustrate the Cougars.

On Saturday, September 26, the Eagles traveled to St. Maries, Idaho. St. Maries is a non-league opponent but always a tough one. The team started out strong in this match-up. There was great play by all. The Eagles jumped out to a quick lead and held off the Lumberjacks in the first set, winning 25-20. The second set proved more difficult for the Eagles. The Lumberjacks started getting some key kills from their outside hitter. The set was tied at 18 and at 20, but the Lumberjacks pulled away and won 22-25. The third set was a repeat of the second set for the Eagles. The two teams battled, but the Lumberjacks pulled away and won the third set 22-25. This put the match into set 4. The Lady Eagles struggled with communication and defense in this set. The team lost 13-25 and lost the match. Lauryn Bassen led the Eagles with 4 aces and 27 assists. Savannah Rolston led in the defensive category with 12 digs and a 2.3 passing serve score. Leslie Stillar had 13 kills, and Alex Daggy led in the block category with 2 blocks.

Lakeside boys take 1st, girls 2nd, at Farragut XC Invite

Lakeside varsity boys cross country team took the small school team title at the Farragut/Super 1 Invite last Saturday, September 19th, 2009 at Farragut State Park, Athol, Idaho, led by Jr Colton Berry's second place finish in 18:01.7. He was closely followed by teammate Ryan Rojeski at 18:29.7, who took 3rd individually in the small school bracket. The Eagles finished with 60 points to Logos' 74, Bonners Ferry's 80 and Timberlake's 124. Chewelah was 7th in small school team scoring with 181 and Newport came in 12th with 278.

The Lakeside varsity girls grabbed the 2nd place small school trophy with 39 points behind team winner Timberlake with 25 points. The Eagles' senior veteran Evangeline Rehwaldt was 3rd in small school with a 21:39.3. Cross country newcomer Kenna Middleton was 6th with a 22:13.8.

Both teams are ranked 4th in state to start the early coaches polling.

Lady Eagles' Volleyball starts their new season!

The Lady Eagles started the season with a disappointing loss to Northwest Christian in their season opener on September 8. The scores were 17-25, 19-25,25-14, 25-23, and 12-15. The Eagles started out slowly against NWC and couldn’t get in stride until the third set of the match. They lost the first two sets and then came back to win the next two. The fifth and final set, they found themselves behind, 7-12. They battled back but lost 12-15. There were some crowd-thrilling, amazing plays during the match. The highlight was when a defensive dig on our side went to the back wall. Grace Stillar got the ball up, and Savannah Rolston passed a ball over 50 feet to score a point. The Eagles were led by Leslie Stillar with 11 kills and Pam Seitz with 10. Lauryn Bassen had 32 assists for the Eagles, and Alex Daggy had 4 blocks.

Wednesday, September 9, was a different story for the Eagles. The Eagles hosted Medical Lake on Lakeside’s home court. They started out strong and never looked back. The Eagles swept the Cardinals in three sets, 25-10, 25-10, 25-23. Leslie Stillar racked up 15 kills and 3 aces. Grace Stillar also scored 3 aces.

The members of the 2009 volleyball team are Leslie Stillar and Lauryn Bassen,(captains) Alex Daggy, Pam Seitz, Katie Whiteside, Amy Juran, Ashley Durrance, Chelsey Johnson, Grace Stillar, Lexie Zappone, Savannah Rolston, and Kayley Watkins. We are looking forward to a great 2009 season.

Fastpitch earns trip to state with crossover win!

Lakeside softball win over Omak in Brewster Dist. 6/7 regional crossover challenge on Saturday as reported May 24th on Spokesman-Review.com:

Lakeside (18-4) rallied late to earn the No. 2 seed to state with a 4-2 victory over Omak at the District 6/7 regional in Brewster.

The Eagles trailed 2-0 heading into the top of the seventh, but Heather Hesselgesser ripped a two-out double to knot the score and send it to extra innings. In the eighth, Nicole Jurek and Michaela Brittos hit back-to-back run-scoring doubles to complete the comeback victory.

Vanessa Ahrendt picked up the win for the Eagles. She went the distance and allowed just one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts. She also doubled twice in four at-bats.

Lakeside fastpitch wins District 7 Championship!

After locking down the NEA League Title with an undefeated 12-0 league season, the Lady Eagles secured the 2009 District 7 1A Fastpitch Championship with 5th-inning run-ruled wins over both Chewelah and Kettle Falls on Saturday, May 16th at University High School.

Lakeside overcame Chewelah 15-5 in the 11am game, and then bested Kettle Falls in the 1pm title game, 23-2. With the District 7 championship wins, Lakeside takes their overall 2009 season win-loss record to 17-4.

Between games, seven Eagles were presented All-Conference certificates and medallions. Four Eagles made first team: League MVP senior ss Heather Hesselgesser, senior 3b Moriah Beeler, junior 1b Lauryn Bassen and freshman p Vanessa Ahrendt. Three were awarded second team honors: senior cf Cami Alexander, senior lf Nicole Jurek and sophomore 2b Michaela Brittos.

Colville holds off Lakeside, #1 Lady Eagles head to Districts

The Lady Eagles softball team travelled to 2A Great Northern League champion Colville Tuesday, May 12th and came away with a tough loss, 6-9, after they pushed across only 1 run with bases loaded twice over the last two innings and outhit the Indians 13-9 on the game.

Freshman Lakeside pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt took the loss to go to 15-3 overall, while Colville was forced to bring in their 10-0 starter Carr in the 3rd as reserve pitcher Holst could not hold off the Eagle bats.

The NEA League champion Lady Eagles now head into District 7 play this Saturday against Chewelah, after the Cougars from Jenkins High defeated Newport 11-5 in district loser out play-in action yesterday. Game time is 11:00 am at University High School in the Spokane Valley. Only two teams from District 7 1A (comprised of only the Northeast "A" League) will advance to regionals against the Caribou Trail League's District 6 first round loser pool next Saturday, May 23rd, in Brewster to battle for the #2 and #4 seeds to state from District 6/7. Winners of District 6 first round play will battle for #1 and #3 seeds to state.

The Lakeside-9 Mile Falls, WA Eagles ran through Northeast A League play undefeated, ending at 12-0 in doubleheader wins at Kettle Falls last Friday, May 8th with scores of 9-2 and 8-1.

The Eagles face 2A Great Northern League champion Colville (12-0, 16-1) this Tuesday, May 12th before heading into 1A District 7 play this weekend to determine the two entries to regionals.

Lady Eagles run-rule Newport twice, clinch NEA league title

The Lakeside fastpitch squad beat the Newport Grizzlies 15-4 in 6 innings in game 1 of last Friday's home doubleheader and then shut them out in game 2 10-0 in 5 innings to push their NEA league record to 9-0 and their overall record to 12-3.

Meanwhile, Freeman split their Friday doubleheader with Kettle Falls to drop their league record to 6-5 with one game to go, thereby assuring the clinch of first place for the Eagles. Kettle Falls fell to 4-4 with three games to go, while Chewelah stands at 4-5, also with three games to go. Newport remains winless in league at 0-9 with only a doubleheader at Chewelah remaining.

Junior Lauryn Bassen led the Lady Eagles offense in game 1 with her 2nd home run of 2009, to add to 2 hits each by FR catcher Savannah Rolston and SR Cami Alexander. Lakeside was aided by Newport's 8 errors. SR all-leaguer Heather Hesselgesser is out with a dislocated thumb injury but could return in time for post season play.

Bassen then hit her 3rd home run of the season in game 2, to add to the doubles by freshman battery-mates pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt and Rolston, and SR Moriah Beeler's 3 hits. Ahrendt's double was a 2 RBI walk-off to end the game in the bottom of the fifth. She was credited with both wins, taking her season and HS-career record to 12-2. She has now thrown 4 shut-outs.

Lakeside faces Freeman Tuesday, May 5th, then travels to Kettle Falls for a Friday, May 8th league season-ending doubleheader. The Lady Eagles' final game before the District Tournament on Saturday, May 16th is at 2A GNL-leading Colville on Tuesday, May 12th. The Indians are 10-0 in league and 14-1 overall.

After losing a close one 1-3 at 2A West Valley Monday, the Lakeside varsity softball team came out strong and lit up the Cougars of Jenkins High 15-0 yesterday afternoon, April 28th in Chewelah. Freshman Vanessa Ahrendt got the 4 hit shut out win to take her record to 10-2. Her battery-mate behind the plate was freshman Savannah Rolston.

Eight different Eagles combined for 15 hits, which included 2 by Lauryn Bassen, one of which was a triple:

Their last game before the post season is a non-league matchup at 2A Colville Indians, who lead the Great Northern League with an 8-0 record (12-1 overall), on Tuesday, May 12th, 4pm start.

Late WV rally takes one from Eagles fastpitch

The Lakeside fastpitch squad finished the top of the 6th leading the 2A West Valley Eagles (7-1 GNL) 1-0 yesterday afternoon in Millwood, but succumbed to a 3 run rally in the bottom of the 6th to take a 3-1 loss.

The Lakeside Eagles had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs in the top of the 7th when Cami Alexander drove a sharp hit to shallow centerfield that was scooped up at the knees in flight and on the run by West Valley's centerfielder to end the hard fought game.

The Lady Eagles remain at 6-0 in NEA action but fall to 9-3 overall as they head to Chewelah for a league game against Jenkins High School (4-4 NEA, 10-5 overall).

3A Timberlake downs Lakeside softball 6-5

The Timberlake Tigers of Spirit Lake, Idaho bested Lakeside's fastpitch squad this afternoon 6-5. Timberlake's senior pitcher, Afton Allred, already committed to Div 1 Cleveland State, got the win. Lakeside's freshman pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt picked up her first loss of the season to go to 9-1.

3A (ID) Timberlake moves to 13-4 on the season overall, while Lakeside drops to 9-2.

The Eagles travel to 2A West Valley (6-3 overall, 5-1 GNL) next Monday, April 27th.

Lakeside baseball ranked 5th in 1A poll

Lakeside fastpitch 6-0 in league with home win over KF

The Lakeside softball team defeated the Kettle Falls Lady Bulldogs at home on Tuesday, April 21st by a score of 5-4 to remain undefeated in NEA league play with a 6-0 record. Chewelah and Freeman are tied at 3-3 after the Cougars beat Newport last night. Kettle Falls stands at 1-3 and Newport remains winless at 0-4 in league.

Senior 3rd-baseman Moriah Beeler led the Eagles offense with 4 hits. FR pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt, SR shortstop Heather Hesselgesser, JR 1st-baseman Lauryn Bassen, FR catcher Savannah Rolston and SO 2nd-baseman Michaela Brittos each had 2 hits, including Hesselgesser's triple and Rolston's double. SR centerfielder Cami Alexander filled out Lakeside's 15 hits with a single. Kettle Falls managed 7 hits.

The Lady Eagles are 9-1 overall going into this afternoon's 4:00pm inter-state game at Timberlake (Spirit Lake, ID), which leads the Idaho Intermountain League with a 10-0 record. The Tigers are 12-4 overall, and run-ruled Freeman 10-0 in 6 with 15 hits to 1 on Tuesday.

Lady Eagles go to 5-0 league in doubleheader wins

The Lakeside fastpitch squad visited the Freeman Scotties today for league doubleheader action and came away with two wins, upping its league record to 5-0 and its overall record to 8-1.

After giving up 4 runs to none through the first two innings, Lakeside freshman pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt and the Eagles defense got tough and shut out Freeman batters the rest of the way, giving the offense a chance to come back and score 2 runs in the 3rd and 7 in the 6th to win the first contest 9-4. Ahrendt helped her own cause with 2 hits, joining Moriah Beeler with 3 and Heather Hesselgesser, Michelle Dezihan and Nicole Jurek each with 1.

Ahrendt, who went the distance in both games despite being on antibiotics for possible strep throat, gave up 8 runs on 10 hits in the second game, but led the Eagles offense with 4 hits as they scored 14 runs for the win on an incredible 16 hits. Moriah Beeler again had 3 hits, while Lauryn Bassen, Cami Alexander and Jurek had 2 each. They were joined by freshman catcher Savannah Rolston, sophomore Michaela Brittos and senior first team all-leaguer Hesselgesser, who hit the lone triple for the game. Ahrendt, Bassen and Alexander each had a double.

Lakeside now leads the league with the 5-0 record, followed by Freeman at 3-3, Chewelah at 2-3, Kettle Falls at 1-2 and Newport at 0-3. The Lady Eagles take on Kettle Falls, their perennial nemesis, at home next Tuesday, April 21st at 4:00pm. They then travel to Athol, Idaho for a non-league contest against Timberlake on Thursday, April 23rd.

Lakeside fastpitch run-rules Newport 13-0 in 5

The Lady Eagles softball team visited Newport this afternoon and blanked the Lady Grizzlies 13-0, run-ruling them in 5 innings and raising their league record to 3-0. The Eagles are now 6-1 overall heading into Saturday's doubleheader at Freeman. Game time is at noon.

Junior Lauryn Bassen hit the lone home run of the game, while senior Heather Hesselgesser stroked 3 singles, freshman pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt 2, and senior catcher Cassy Gowin popped a triple. Newport managed only two hits off of Ahrendt, who took her season win record to 6-0 with the shutout, her second of the year.

Lakeside softball run-rules 2A Riverside 16-6 in 6

The Riverside Rams graciously hosted Lakeside's non-league home game against them yesterday afternoon, April 14th, after a freak spring storm blanketed the Eagles' softball field with 3" of wet snow. Unfortunately for the 2A Lady Rams, the hospitality was returned with a 6th inning run-ruled win by 1A Lakeside, 16-6.

The Lady Eagles fastpitch squad travels to Newport for an NEA league matchup at 4:00pm this afternoon, and then visits Freeman for a league doubleheader this Saturday, starting at noon.

Lakeside fastpitch takes 2 from Chewelah at home

It took just an hour for the Lakeside Lady Eagles to dispatch the visiting Chewelah Cougars fastpitch team this afternoon by a score of 7-2 in the first game of a league doubleheader. The Eagles followed up the feat with another win over the squad from Jenkins High, 6-3.

The wins give the Eagles a 2-0 record in league and take them to 4-1 overall. Freshman lefty pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt got credited with both wins as Lakeside batters popped 8 hits in each game to Chewelah's 5 in the first game and 3 in the second. Eagles senior Heather Hesselgesser had the lone homerun on the day.

The Lady Eagles host 2A Great Northern League member Riverside next Tuesday, April 14th, game time 4:00pm, and then travel to Newport for a 4:00pm NEA league matchup on Wednesday, April 15th.

Eagles softball wins Cheney slugfest

Taking advantage of the hard, compacted field at Cheney, the Lady Eagles fastpitch squad belted three homers to the Blackhawks' two to win a slugfest this afternoon by a score of 11-5 and improve their record to 2-1.

Michelle Deziham, Nicole Jurek and Michaela Brittos each cannoned one through the Blackhawks outfield to lead the barrage for Lakeside, while Eagles freshman pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt helped her cause in the circle by pelting a double and two singles. Moriah Beeler also added 3 singles to the singles hit by Cami Alexander, Deziham and freshman Savannah Rolston to round out Lakeside's 12 hits to Cheney's 7.

The Lady Eagles now enter league play with a doubleheader this Saturday at home against Jenkins HS of Chewelah. First game starts at noon.

Fastpitch run-rules Cedar Park Christian 14-0

The Lakeside varsity fastpitch team traveled to Bothell and shut out Cedar Park Christian 14-0 in a run-ruled 5 innings under the lights of Inglemoor HS Field Friday night, March 27.

Lakeside's freshman pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt posted 7 strikeouts as she held CPC to 2 hits. First Team All-League senior Heather Hesselgesser had 4 hits including a homerun to highlight the scoring for the Eagles.

The Saturday afternoon game against Bainbridge was cancelled due to weather.

The Lady Eagles return to action Wednesday, April 8th at Cheney in a 4pm game, and then play a NEA league doubleheader at home on Saturday, April 11th against Jenkins HS of Chewelah beginning at noon.

Fastpitch suffers tough loss in home opener

After having to cancel another game due to weather, the one against Riverside originally scheduled for this past Tuesday, Lakeside's varsity fastpitch team finally got to play ball, but were out run by Rathdrum, Idaho's Lakeland Lady Hawks this afternoon in a home opener, 7-10.

The Hawks took a large early lead, scoring 9 runs in the first three innings with hot bats. But then Lakeside's pitching corp stiffened up and began shutting Lakeland down, giving the Lady Eagles a chance to chip away at the lead and get back in the game, staving off a loss by run-rule.

The Eagles entered the bottom frame of the 7th and last inning down 4-10, but kept up the offensive pressure, scoring 3 more runs and putting runners in scoring position before succumbing to a solid defense and taking the tough loss 7-10 to go 0-1 on the young 2009 season.

The varsity squad leaves tomorrow right after breakfast for Bothel, Washington to take on Cedar Park Christian in a 6:30pm night game, and then plays 3A Bainbridge on Saturday afternoon.

Cheney softball game rescheduled

Thursday's Lakeside fastpitch softball opener at Cheney has been rescheduled to April 8th.

The Lady Eagles will now open the 2009 season with two home games next week, hosting 2A Riverside Tuesday, March 24th at 3:30pm, and then Lakeland (Rathdrum, Idaho) Thursday, March 26th at 4:00pm.

The varsity squad will then head over to Bothell, Washington to play 1A Cedar Park Christian at 6:30pm under the lights of Pop Keeney Stadium, and then will ride the ferry across Puget Sound to visit the 3A Bainbridge Spartans (map) in a Saturday afternoon (2pm) contest.
