Lady Eagles go to 5-0 league in doubleheader wins

The Lakeside fastpitch squad visited the Freeman Scotties today for league doubleheader action and came away with two wins, upping its league record to 5-0 and its overall record to 8-1.

After giving up 4 runs to none through the first two innings, Lakeside freshman pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt and the Eagles defense got tough and shut out Freeman batters the rest of the way, giving the offense a chance to come back and score 2 runs in the 3rd and 7 in the 6th to win the first contest 9-4. Ahrendt helped her own cause with 2 hits, joining Moriah Beeler with 3 and Heather Hesselgesser, Michelle Dezihan and Nicole Jurek each with 1.

Fastpitch suffers tough loss in home opener

After having to cancel another game due to weather, the one against Riverside originally scheduled for this past Tuesday, Lakeside's varsity fastpitch team finally got to play ball, but were out run by Rathdrum, Idaho's Lakeland Lady Hawks this afternoon in a home opener, 7-10.

The Hawks took a large early lead, scoring 9 runs in the first three innings with hot bats. But then Lakeside's pitching corp stiffened up and began shutting Lakeland down, giving the Lady Eagles a chance to chip away at the lead and get back in the game, staving off a loss by run-rule.

The Eagles entered the bottom frame of the 7th and last inning down 4-10, but kept up the offensive pressure, scoring 3 more runs and putting runners in scoring position before succumbing to a solid defense and taking the tough loss 7-10 to go 0-1 on the young 2009 season.

The varsity squad leaves tomorrow right after breakfast for Bothel, Washington to take on Cedar Park Christian in a 6:30pm night game, and then plays 3A Bainbridge on Saturday afternoon.

LMS 8th grade varsity softball goes undefeated!

The future of Lakeside high school fastpitch softball guzzled an energy drink of optimism as the Lakeside Middle School 8th grade varsity softball team, under the direction of Lakeside HS varsity softball Head Coach Chuck Moffatt, bulldozed through their 2008 fall season undefeated.

The highlight was beating Colville, something 8th graders haven't accomplished since 1996, according to player reports. The feat was sweeter since it was on Colville's home dirt.

It is no secret the Colville school ball players have been playing fastpitch on ASA summer tournament teams for years. Their experience in playing together throughout the year as the Colville Tribe fastpitch team year after year has made them a dominant force in the fall (middle school) and spring (high school).

Last year a big percentage of the girls on the current LMS 8th grade team were organized for the first time into a local ASA summer team, the 12U Lakesiders, under the coaching of John Tiffany and Jeff Turner, fathers of pitcher Nichole Tiffany and catcher/SS Hanna Turner, respectively. The first year team won the 2008 Spokane Girls Fastpitch Softball Association league championship, and then played 2008 fall ball together as the 14U Lakesiders, being joined by Lakeside High School freshmen Savannah Rolston (3B/C) and Vanessa Ahrendt (P/1B).

While Lakeside High School, having moved to 1A over three years ago, no longer plays 2A Colville in league, their former rival represents the level of play the team can expect to encounter at the 1A state championships from west side teams, especially 3rd place LaCenter, runners up Castle Rock and 2008 1A champions Montesano (former 2A state champions in '98, '00, '01 and '03) .

Lakeside took 4th in state in spring 2008 after coming in 3rd in 2007.

Fastpitch takes 3rd in state!

After winning a first round game 2-0 on May 25th over Nooksack Valley in the 2007 1A state tournament in Moses Lake, the Lakeside Lady Eagles fastpitch squad was sent to the consolation bracket in the second round game by a 6-0 loss to eventual state champion Castle Rock.

In the first game of consolation play, the Lady Eagles faced NEA district nemesis Kettle Falls, and defeated them by a score of 4-1, moving on to the consolation quarterfinals to face Lynden Christian. Lakeside blew LC out of the tournament by a score of 12-2.

In what would be the third game of the day, Lakeside then faced bi-district Caribou League foe Chelan, and went on to win that game by a score of 4-2, assuring the Nine Mile Falls team at least a fourth place finish in the state tournament.

Playing their fourth game of the day, the Lady Eagles then took on a tough Chimacum squad and defeated them by a score of 5-4, to nail down 3rd place behind Montesano at 2nd and Castle Rock the 2007 1A state fastpitch champion.

Lady Eagles advance to state!

With a second round win against CTL #4 Okanogan on Thursday, the Lakeside fastpitch squad returned to Kettle Falls on Saturday to take on CTL's #1 seed Cascade, which was defeated earlier in the day by Colfax by the score of 5-3, in a loser out game.

The Lady Eagles repeated their performance from the second game, going on a 13 run rampage in the top of the 5th inning, to run-rule Cascade and end the game 15-3 as the fifth came to an end with Cascade unable to score again. Lakeside outhit Cascade 10-6 and committed only 1 error to Cascade's 6. Jordan got the win, and Barcellos smacked a homerun on her way to marking 3 hits. H. Hesselgesser also had 3 hits.

With the win, the Lady Eagles were assured at least the fourth seed to state.

In the second game of the day that would determine seeding for the 3rd and 4th state spots from NEA/CTL bi-district, Lakeside faced Kettle Falls, which fell to CTL #1 Chelan earlier in the afternoon, but went on to blank CTL #5 Brewster by a score of 5-0. Once again the Lady Eagles' bats came alive, as they made 15 hits and won the game 7-3, securing the 3rd seed to the state fastpitch tournament.

The Northeast A League dominated the tournament, as three of the four seeds were claimed by NEA's Colfax (#2), Lakeside (#3) and Kettle Falls (#4). Only Chelan (#1 seed) of the Caribou Trail League joined the three NEA teams to state.

Congratulations to all the NEA fastpitch teams, and especially to the Lady Eagles!

Go Lakeside!

Fastpitch stumbles in first round

As the #3 seed from the NEA in the first round of the bi-district fastpitch tournament last Thursday, the Lady Eagles were the visitors against Caribou Trail League #2 Chelan, despite hosting the first and second rounds at Lakeside High School. The Lady Eagles were unable to capitalize on the home field advantage, however, as they failed to get a hit or score a run, while committing 5 errors, falling to Chelan by a score of 3-0. Senior Lacey Jordan took the loss.

In the second round loser's bracket against CTL's Okanogan played later in the day, Lakeside's bats exploded as they smacked 12 hits on the way to a 14-2 win in a run-ruled 6 innings to stay alive in bi-district. Jordan got the win.

No automatic bids in the NEA

Just when a person thought winning the NEA league fastpitch championship rewards the team with a number 1 seed to the bi-district tournament, think again. Apparently the title gives a team first and second round hosting privileges only, but still requires the league champion to pass through the gauntlet of a one-day district tournament before actually being seeded at the very same bi-district bracket it was given the honor to host.

And so the Lakeside Lady Eagles traveled to Kettle Falls last Saturday to face the host of the district tournament, #4 Kettle Falls, a team Lakeside already defeated three times in league play by scores of 8-3, 6-1 and 7-0, in the second round. It remains a mystery why the district's fourth place team hosts the district tournament.

Kettle Falls must be a magical kingdom, because the Kettle Falls fastpitch team, with a league record of 8-7, took down #5 Chewelah 2-1, #1 Lakeside 4-2, and #2 Colfax 5-3 -- one two three -- in a marathon tripleheader.

In the second round game against Lakeside, which had a first round bye along with Colfax, KF managed to score 4 runs despite being out-hit 8-6 by the Eagles, and despite committing 4 errors to Lakeside's 1.

With the wins against the league co-champions, Kettle Falls earned the #1 bracketed seed into the first round of the bi-district tournament, hosted by now #3 seed Lakeside. Colfax earned the bi-district #2 seed from the NEA by beating league #3 Freeman in the second round, and Freeman earned the #4 seed to bi-district by beating league #6 and winless Newport in the first round.

Colfax nudges Lady Eagles into #1 seed

The Colfax softball squad split their doubleheader with Freeman last Monday afternoon, and so finished the regular season tied with Lakeside for the league championship with a record of 11 wins and 4 losses.

The Lady Eagles won 2 games to 1 over Colfax in league play, and that was enough to nudge Lakeside into an automatic number 1 seed spot for the bi-district regional playoffs, and give them hosting privileges for the first and second round.

First round play begins May 17th, with the NEA #1 seed hosting the #4 seed from the Caribou Trail League at 3:00 pm.

Great job Lady Eagles!

Fastpitch ends regular season with DH sweep of KF

The Lady Eagles fastpitch squad swept Kettle Falls 6-1, 7-0 in last Friday's afternoon doubleheader at KF to finish the regular season with a strong league record of 11-4.

The wins put the Eagles some small fraction of a game behind leader Colfax in the league standings, currently at 10-3 with a doubleheader yet to play tonight against Freeman. If Colfax wins both games, they would take the league title with a record of 12-3, while a split would tie them with Lakeside, making the two teams co-champions of the NEA. Two losses by Colfax to Freeman would hand Lakeside the outright title and let them back into regional play with a number 1 seed from the NEA.

Weekend Fastpitch at Newport

The Lady Eagles had a very productive road trip last Saturday, sweeping an error-prone Newport fastpitch squad in the doubleheader by scores of 19-1 and 28-0.

Newport's 9 errors in the first game proved to be their downfall, as Lakeside only needed 6 hits to Newport's 5 to win by 18 runs. Lakeside's fielding was once again perfect as they committed no errors in the game. Zidack got the win with Barcellos relieving.

Newport could manage no runs in the second game, again bobbling the ball 7 times to give the Lady Eagles scoring opportunities. The 28 Lakeside runs were scored on only 6 hits. While the Eagles miscued twice, Newport could not take advantage of those errors or their own 4 hits, and were blanked through the 5 innings played, at which time the run-rule kicked in and the Eagles were able to jump on the bus for home.

Zidack took the win and was again relieved by Barcellos. The two games put the Lady Eagles ahead in the league win-loss column 5 wins to 4 losses.

Despite scoring two runs in the top of the seventh, the Lady Eagles fastpitch squad could not overcome the 4-1 deficit built up by the bottom of the fifth, and lost at Freeman Tuesday afternoon 4 to 3, to drop to 2-2 in league play.

Freeman outhit Lakeside 7 to 6, but committed 5 errors in glaring contrast to the Lady Eagles' perfect fielding effort.

Zidack was nicked for the loss, and was relieved by Barcellos. H. Hesselgesser and Crouse had two singles each, joined by Bassen and Jurek with a single each. Five different Freeman players hit doubles to overcome the five errors for the win.

The Lady Eagles play a doubleheader against NEA rival and fellow former-GNL member Chewelah on Saturday.

The Lakeside Lady Eagles fastpitch softball team led Lakeland of North Idaho all the way yesterday, holding off a seventh inning surge to win at home 7-6.
