Chelan drops Lakeside from state football picture

Lakeside's football playoff hopes were dashed as Caribou Trail League's Chelan beat the Eagles 35-10 in a soggy Moses Lake this afternoon. The Goats entered the contest with a 6-2 record.

The game was a regional crossover with District 6 to determine teams for the first round of the 1A state playoffs. NEA's Freeman and Chewelah were playing CTL's #4 Omak and #2 Cascade respectively later in the day.

Football finds Freeman formidable foe

The Lakeside football team invited teams to come play from far and wide this season -- from Quincy, Washington, Moscow, Idaho and La Grande, Oregon -- to ensure a challenging schedule, but found one of its toughest contests so far in its own backyard when it traveled to Freeman last Friday, October 24th for a regular Northeast A league matchup.

The Scotties prevailed 47-6 in what the Spokesman-Review online described as a "rout" and a "thrashing."

Freeman senior quarterback/kicker Luke Mathews was a one-man wrecking crew as he completed 10 of 13 passes for 193 yards and four touchdowns, ran for another and kicked five PATS.

With the win Freeman moved its record to 3-0 in league, 6-1 overall, while the Eagles fell to 2-1 in league, 5-3 overall. Both teams have one game remaining in the regular season, the Scotties entertaining Chewelah at home, Lakeside hosting Newport.

Football battle of the unbeatens

Lakeside varsity football visits Freeman this Friday, October 24th, 2008 for a showdown between the two remaining unbeaten schools in Northeast 1A league play and bragging rights to sole possession of first place for at least a week.

Freeman enters the fray with an overall season record of 5-1. Lakeside comes in at 5-2, after non-league losses to 2A West Valley and Idaho 4A Moscow (Washington 3A equivalent), and non-league wins over 2A Quincy (26-8), 2A Medical Lake (31-28) and Oregon 4A (Washington 2A equivalent) La Grande (17-14).

Freeman's only loss is to Lakeside's former 2A Great Northern League rival Deer Park (14-32). The Scotties' non-league wins included Idaho 3A (Washington 2A equivalent) Priest River (32-14), Idaho 4A Lakeland (26-13) and 2B White Swan (33-13).

In league games so far, Freeman blanked host Newport (40-0) and visiting Kettle Falls (45-0), while Lakeside handled Kettle Falls (31-7) on the road but struggled against Chewelah (21-19) at home last Friday. Chewelah had dispatched Newport by a score of 54-0 two weeks ago.

Lakeside runs over Newport

The Lakeside Eagles used offense, defense and special teams to score at least once in every quarter of their home game against Newport on September 21st.

Sr. HB Jake Graham ran 94 yards for a TD to start the scoring for the offense, with Casey Duclos connecting for the PAT kick to make it 7-0 in the first quarter. The defense added their own TD in the second when Sr. LB Wes McAdam returned an interception over the goal line from 30 yards out. Duclos made it 14-0 with another successful kick.

Special teams joined the scoring frenzy when Jr. return man Eric Vanmeter took Newport's second half kick off 85 yards for a TD. Newport's dangerous Erik Weidemeir finally scored for the visitors with a weaving 65 yard run, but that TD was answered by a third Lakeside TD when Jr. QB Brady Blankevoort ran the ball in from the 2. With Duclos' PAT kick, the score at the end of the 3rd was 27-7.

Weidemeir pulled down a pass and took it 53 yards to score for Newport in the 4th, but the Eagles erased that with a Jr. RB Reid Chivers 21 yard running TD (Duclos kick) to end the scoring at 34-13 and send their 2007 record to 4 wins and no losses.

Lakeside goes to 3-0

Lakeside's football team moved their season record to 3-0 with a convincing win over Colfax Friday night by a score of 35-14.

The Eagles' defense started the scoring in the first quarter with a blocked punt that Reid Chivers returned 42 yards for a TD, capped by a successful Casey Duclos PAT kick. Colfax responded with 7 points of their own, but Eagles QB Brady Blankevoort found WR Kyle Stillar from 5 yards out to score a TD and with Duclos' kick, Lakeside was back on top 14-7 to end the first quarter.

Neither team could put up points in the second quarter, but Lakeside got things going again after the break when Chivers ran the ball in from 3 yards out. With a successful Duclos kick following the TD, the third quarter ended with Lakeside up 21-7.

Chivers started the fourth quarter scoring with an 8 yard TD run, again capped by a Duclos kick, and then halfback Jake Graham was handed the ball, and he ran it in from the 34 yard line to take the score to 34-7. Duclos kicked his fifth PAT to give the Eagles a 35-7 lead. Colfax finally found the end zone again late in the fourth, but it was too little too late as time ran out with Lakeside ahead 35-14.

Great game, Eagles! Go Lakeside!

Eagles hold KF scoreless

Repeating a dominant performance of week 1 on the road, the Lakeside defense held their opponent scoreless through four quarters, as the Eagles topped Kettle Falls 26-0 in the home opener to go up 2-0 on the young 2007 football season.

The Eagles scored in every quarter, beginning with Sr. halfback Jake Graham's 19 yard TD run in the first, capped by Casey Duclos' successful PAT kick. The next two scores were over the top as 6' 3" Jr. QB Brady Blankevoort connected with 6' 2" Sr. WR Jordan Lewis for a passing TD from the 5 in the 2nd, and then Blankevoort found 6' 0" Jr. Eric Vanmeter coming out of the back field for a 21 yard TD pass/reception in the 3rd. Vanmeter put the game away in the 4th with a 41 yard TD run, followed by a Duclos extra point kick to end the scoring.

Other highlights included Carl Park's 2 pass receptions for a team leading total of 67 yards and an interception apiece by Kyle Stiller and Leif Parcell. The Eagles' defense also notched 14 sacks on the night, including 4 by Brett Hendrickson and 3 each by Aaron Filion and Jesse Maggio.

As an added bonus, the big and proud home crowd was serenaded with the fight song by a fired up Eagles' football squad after the victory.

The Eagles travel to 2-0 Colfax on Friday to meet the only other undefeated league team.

Game time 7:00pm.

Eagles run over Chewelah in August opener

Lakeside High School students will return to class for the 2007-2008 school year this Wednesday to find their football team 1-0 on the new season, following an Eagles blanking of Chewelah at Jenkins High School in Chewelah last Friday in a 41-0 first game win.

Jr. fullback Reid Chivers, formerly from Bellingham, tacked up the first three TDs, two in the first quarter, with scoring runs from the 26, the 1 and the 43. Casey Duclos added extra points with successful PAT kicks following the first two TDs.

Lakeside's fourth TD of the first half was made by the defense, as Sr. LB Dustin Baldwin returned a pass interception 39 yards for the score and a 27-0 lead.

In the second half, Jr. slotback Eric Van Meter, NEA special teams MVP last year, was handed the ball and scored the final two TDs from 31 yards out and from 66 yards out, both in the 3rd quarter. Duclos nailed both extra point kicks to end the scoring at 41.

S-R Prep Report previews NEA League football

The 2007 fall football preview has been posted on the spokesmanreview.com Prep Report blog here: Northeast A League team capsules .

Jr. QB Brady Blankevoort "pushed hard for playing time a year ago and did an outstanding job running the scout team as a sophomore. He's a better passer than the Eagles have had in recent years" according to the Prep Report.

The report also mentioned Reid Chivers, Jr. transfer from Bellingham, last year's state wrestling champion at 190 pounds, and quotes Lakeside head football coach Brian Dunn as saying, "As good as he is as a wrestler, I believe he's that much better as a football player."

Lakeside finished the 2006 season in its first year after dropping down to 1A from 2A with a record of 5-6.
