It's a team whose game schedule is barely traceable at the
Spokesman-Review's prep sports site, whose coach was not even listed on the
LHS athletics web site. It's a sport some Lakeside fans may not even realize is played at Lakeside High School.
Yet,
according to those sources, the Lakeside High School Lady Eagles soccer team has gone from a modest 4-8-1 regular season standing (2-2 in league) to winning the
District 7 Championship and busting into the
2008 Washington State Girls 1A State Championship tournament as the District 7 #1 seed.
These ladies endured tough losses against some big schools -- 0-7, 0-8, 0-8 by 4As University, Gonzaga Prep and Central Valley -- to start off the season, and then got beat by slim margins twice by NEA rival Newport (3-4, 3-5), before ending Northeast A League play with a win over Freeman 6-2. They then beat the Scotties again 5-1 in the first game of Districts, to set up a showdown with
unbeaten Newport (
4-0 league, 12-0 overall) for the
single District 7 allocation to the 1A State Championship tournament.
According to the Spokesman-Review, the Lakeside goalie endured a blistering
19 shots on goal over the 80 minute match, while the Lady Eagles could muster only 5 on the Newport goalie.
There were no goals in the first half -- then Newport struck pay dirt at the 51:00 minute mark to go up 1-0. But Lakeside's Baran answered off a Hayes assist (no roster listing can be found on-line and no first names are listed in the score recap at the Spokesman-Review online) to knot the score 1-1 at the 57:00 mark.
With only 12 minutes to go in regulation, and the score still tied, Baran found the net again off a Dezihan assist to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. No information on how may of those 19 shots-on-goal the Lakeside goalie had to endure over those final 12 minutes, but one could presume the unbeaten Grizzlies were not just laying in the grass picking clover watching the clock tick down to zero, or up to 80, or however they run the clock in this little publicized, at least up to this point, sport.
With guts and glory like they exhibited in this phenomenal post-season play, one could imagine the Lady Eagles soccer squad will be a lot more visible from now on.
Best of luck at State, girls!
