Lady Eagles take 5th place at State

STATE VOLLEYBALL 2009

The Lady Eagles earned the first seed to state at the district playoffs on Saturday, November 7th , by winning the district championship. The State draw was on Sunday, November 8th. The Eagles got a very tough draw, and their bracket was the most difficult. Their first match was against King’s, last year’s State Champion and this year’s predicted State Champion. King’s had faltered in their regional playoffs against Annie Wright and earned a lower seed to state.
The match up proved to be too much for the Lady Eagles. Kings swept the Eagles, three sets to 0, and eventually were crowned the State Champions after winning the State Tournament.
The Eagles had to battle back through the loser’s bracket to earn a trophy. They could not lose again, or they would go home empty-handed. The highest place that Lakeside could take was fifth. The loss to King’s set them up against Granger. Granger was also a state-ranked team. The Eagles were tough, trying to rebound after their loss to King’s. The Eagles swept Granger in three sets. The scores were 25-7, 25-23, and 25-23. Alex Daggy led with 16 kills, and Leslie Stillar was right behind her with 15 kills. Lexie Zappone led defensively with 14 digs, with Grace Stillar right behind her with 13. Lauryn Bassen added 33 assists and 3 kills.
The next match placed them against Connell. This match determined who would play for the 5th and 8th places. The Eagles came out tough and determined. They swept Connell in three sets, 25-19, 26-24, and 25-19. Leslie Stillar had 15 kills and 8 digs. Katie Whiteside and Alex Daggy added 8 kills each. Lauryn Bassen contributed 34 assists, and Lexie Zappone added 9 digs. The Eagles would play for the 5th – place and 8th place trophies.
The stage was set; they were to play Annie Wright. Annie Wright was also a state- ranked team that had beaten King’s in their regional playoff.
The Eagles played like champions: playing with heart, determination, and guts. Things that we had worked on all season long had come together in the last two weeks, and they were playing their best volleyball right when they should. I couldn’t have been prouder as a coach.
The Eagles won the first two sets against Annie Wright 25-19, and 25-10. In the third set they had been down a bit, but had captured the momentum again. They had cruised ahead, and Lauryn Bassen was serving for a string of points when something very unfortunate happened. The scorekeeper called the Eagles “out of rotation.” They knew they were not, but after a ten-minute delay, the scorekeeper realized that she had made an error, but her error became detrimental for the Eagles. When the Eagles returned to the floor, the scorekeeper had changed the score; now the Eagles were losing the set instead of being ahead by three. The Eagles tried to point out her error and even tried to provide her with correct statistical proof of the score but she refused to listen. This three-point error became crucial. If the scorekeeper would have had the correct score, the Eagles would have won the trophy 25-22 in the third set. They ended up losing the third set 24-26, knowing that they had truly won the fifth-place trophy long before it had reached that point. This was mentally devastating for the Eagles. They struggled in the 4th set and lost. They tried to battle back in the fifth set but eventually lost the fifth set 13-15. The error by the scorekeeper was later confirmed by video tape, but WIAA said there was nothing they could do about it. The Eagles had to settle for the 8th - place trophy and just know in their hearts that they had earned fifth place.
The Lady Eagles had a tremendous year. After “truly” only losing to the eventual State Champions at the State Tournament, and sweeping all of their competitors in three sets, working their way through the loser’s bracket was a tough feat. What a great season they had. Congratulations to the Lakeside Volleyball Team for their successful season!

Volleyball falls to eventual champion in 1st round to end 8th in state

5th place is the best a team can hope for after losing in the first round of the 1A state volleyball tournament. Unfortunately, the first round saw the Lakeside Lady Eagles paired with the eventual state champions King's team, which swept everyone 3-0 up to the championship game, where it defeated Caribou Trail League member Chelan 3-1 for their 1 and 2 finishes. Chelan had also swept its first 3 opponents 3-0.

Lakeside swept Granger and Connell 3-0 in its next two games to get into the fight for 5th, but fell to Annie Wright 3-2 after a 13-15 heartbreaking tie-breaker loss to end the 2009 state tournament in 8th place. The Lady Eagles dominated AW in the first two games 25-19 and 25-10, but lost a very tough game 26-24, ran out of gas to lose the next game 25-13 to tie the match score at 2-2, re-grouped to fight hard but could not pull out the win in the first to 15 tie-breaker.
Freeman ended its state run in 7th place after beating Royal 3-0 in the first round, but falling to Montesano in the second.

Despite the disappointing placing, it really was a great state run with some very impressive wins along the way.

Lady Eagles are ON TO STATE!

The Lakeside Eagle volleyball team celebrated the high school careers of eight seniors on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. The seniors included Lauryn Bassen and Leslie Stillar (captains) Ashley Durrance, Chelsey Johnson, Alex Daggy, Amy Juran, Katie Whiteside, and Pam Seitz. These young ladies were recognized and honored for their commitment, hard work, and dedication to the volleyball program. Their last match on their home court did not turn out how they wanted. They met the Newport Grizzlies. Newport was undefeated and League Champions. The Eagles had many opportunities to take over the match but lost in four games. The scores were 22-25, 25-19, 22-25, and 20-25. Lauryn Bassen led the Eagles with 33 assists, 3 blocks, and 1 ace. Alex Daggy added 15 kills, and Grace Stillar had 12 digs and 1 ace.

The Eagles finished the season tied for second place with Freeman. They met Freeman in the first round of play-offs on Saturday, November 7. The Eagles stormed into districts starting the district play-offs with Katie Whiteside serving 12 unanswered points. The Eagles swept Freeman in three games; 25-8, 25-21, 25-14. Leslie Stillar and Alex Daggy racked up 15 kills a piece. Lauryn Bassen added 29 assists and 4 aces. In the defensive column, Leslie Stillar and Lexie Zappone each had 1 block. Grace Stillar and Alex Daggy led with 8 digs a piece.

The Eagles victory set them up for the District Championship. They met the Newport Grizzlies one more time. The Lady Eagles barreled out to an early lead, and the Grizzlies did not know how to respond. The tremendous blocking at the net frustrated the Newport hitters. It was a battle to the finish, with the Eagles never letting up. The Eagles won the first two games 25-19, 25-20. The third game was quite a battle. The Grizzlies took a quick lead, but put up a fight with every point. The Grizzlies were ahead 24–19 when Katie Whiteside stepped up to the serving line. Knowing that one point, one mistake, would be the game, and take the match into a fourth game, the Eagles never gave up. Katie was clutch, and so was the whole team. They won the next eight consecutive points, took the District Championship, and won the first seed to State. Leslie Stillar had 8 kills and 10 digs. Alex Daggy contributed 7 kills, 4 blocks, and 6 digs; Savannah Rolston added 12 digs. Lauryn Bassen had 22 assists and 2 aces. Katie Whiteside added two very important aces. The team had 9 blocks against Newport. CONGRATULATIONS LAKESIDE VOLLEYBALL!

Congratulations also to NEA All-League Volleyball Players:

First Team – Alex Daggy and Leslie Stillar
Second Team – Lauryn Bassen

The Lady Eagles Begin League Play

Fresh after a much-anticipated game that resulted in a HUGE win against the Colfax Bulldogs, their long-time rivals, the Eagles had their first league match. After a big break between the matches, the Lady Eagles were excited for the game on September 24. The Eagles met Chewelah at home. The Eagles had a slow start and were plagued by hitting errors. They found themselves down 8-0 in the first game. After the Eagles took a quick time-out to regroup, they roared back winning the first set 25-18. Their tough serving game, and their change in hitting strategy changed the momentum of the match. They won the second set 25-14. Katie Whiteside started the third set with 17 consecutive serves, 4 of those serves being aces. The final set was 25-10. What a way to start league play! Leslie Stillar racked up 15 kills and 14 digs. Lauryn Bassen fed the hitters with 31 assists, and Alex Daggy added 4 blocks to frustrate the Cougars.

On Saturday, September 26, the Eagles traveled to St. Maries, Idaho. St. Maries is a non-league opponent but always a tough one. The team started out strong in this match-up. There was great play by all. The Eagles jumped out to a quick lead and held off the Lumberjacks in the first set, winning 25-20. The second set proved more difficult for the Eagles. The Lumberjacks started getting some key kills from their outside hitter. The set was tied at 18 and at 20, but the Lumberjacks pulled away and won 22-25. The third set was a repeat of the second set for the Eagles. The two teams battled, but the Lumberjacks pulled away and won the third set 22-25. This put the match into set 4. The Lady Eagles struggled with communication and defense in this set. The team lost 13-25 and lost the match. Lauryn Bassen led the Eagles with 4 aces and 27 assists. Savannah Rolston led in the defensive category with 12 digs and a 2.3 passing serve score. Leslie Stillar had 13 kills, and Alex Daggy led in the block category with 2 blocks.

Lady Eagles' Volleyball starts their new season!

The Lady Eagles started the season with a disappointing loss to Northwest Christian in their season opener on September 8. The scores were 17-25, 19-25,25-14, 25-23, and 12-15. The Eagles started out slowly against NWC and couldn’t get in stride until the third set of the match. They lost the first two sets and then came back to win the next two. The fifth and final set, they found themselves behind, 7-12. They battled back but lost 12-15. There were some crowd-thrilling, amazing plays during the match. The highlight was when a defensive dig on our side went to the back wall. Grace Stillar got the ball up, and Savannah Rolston passed a ball over 50 feet to score a point. The Eagles were led by Leslie Stillar with 11 kills and Pam Seitz with 10. Lauryn Bassen had 32 assists for the Eagles, and Alex Daggy had 4 blocks.

Wednesday, September 9, was a different story for the Eagles. The Eagles hosted Medical Lake on Lakeside’s home court. They started out strong and never looked back. The Eagles swept the Cardinals in three sets, 25-10, 25-10, 25-23. Leslie Stillar racked up 15 kills and 3 aces. Grace Stillar also scored 3 aces.

The members of the 2009 volleyball team are Leslie Stillar and Lauryn Bassen,(captains) Alex Daggy, Pam Seitz, Katie Whiteside, Amy Juran, Ashley Durrance, Chelsey Johnson, Grace Stillar, Lexie Zappone, Savannah Rolston, and Kayley Watkins. We are looking forward to a great 2009 season.

Lakeside Volleyball Takes 9th at State

State Volleyball 2008

The Eagles headed to Yakima to achieve their final goal of the season. They had accomplished their other three goals: to win the NEA League Title, District Title, and win a state berth at Regionals.

The Eagles were scheduled to play Cascade Christian Academy in their first match at State. The Eagles started off slowly and dropped the first set 22-25. The Eagles roared back and captured the second set 25-16. It looked like the team was starting to get into their rhythm, but they never could get to full stride. They dropped the third set 18-25 and then dropped the fourth set 12-25. Leslie Stillar led the Eagles with 14 kills, 2 aces, and 10 digs. Sara Moffatt added 13 digs. Cami Alexander led in the assist column with 18. Alexander, Alex Daggy, and Brandi Mahoney each had three blocks. Mahoney also served 14 for 14 on her serves.

The Eagles were sent into the consolation bracket and that set them up against Connell. The Eagles were out to seek revenge because Connell beat them in a quarterfinal match last year at the State Tournament. This year was a new story. The Eagles swept them in three straight sets, 25-11, 25-18, 25 -20.. Cami Alexander led the team with 3 blocks, 11 kills, and 2 aces, and Leslie Stillar chipped in 10 digs.

The team needed one more win to make it into a trophy match. The Eagles knew it would be a tough one because it would be against Goldendale, the number-2-ranked team in the state. The Eagles found themselves down 10-19 in the first set. They fought back but eventually lost 20-25. The second set was another battle. The Eagles were up 16-7 let the lead slip away as Goldendale came back swinging. The second set went to Goldendale 23-25. Lakeside won the third game 25-19, but Goldendale came back again and won the fourth game 18-25, earning the match win. Leslie Stillar had 11 kills, Heather Hesselgesser and Sara Moffatt had 12 digs, and Alex Daggy added 5 blocks. The Eagles would have to settle for 9th place.

When the last ball fell I was preparing a speech in my head about winning and losing, but as we huddled in the corner of the Sundome, I realized that the tears on their faces were not tears about winning or losing but were tears about the ending of a team - a team that grew together and became one of the most cohesive teams in Lakeside volleyball history. I told them that they were the biggest winners of them all. Not many teams get to ever experience the true meaning of team like this team did.

Congratulations on your many successes throughout the season!

Volleyball beats Connell, falls to Goldendale

The Lakeside volleyball team started the day with a straight three game win over Connell, 25-11, 25-18, 25-20, but then got tripped up by Goldendale to end its 1A state tournament run.

Goldendale, after losing to Chelan in the first round, beat Stevenson 3-0, Lakeside 3-1, and is playing River View for 5th or 8th place. Chelan beat Cedar Park Christian 3-1 to take on Castle Rock for a chance to play in the championship game later today.

The Lady Eagles played the Timberwolves hard, losing the first two games by a close 20-25 and 23-25, winning the third 25-19, but then lost the fourth game 18-25.

Nice run at state, Lady Eagles!

Lakeside Eagles Volleyball ON TO STATE!!!!

One and Three

The number one seed Lakeside Eagles from the Northeast A League traveled to Moses Lake on Saturday, November 8, 2008, to meet the number three seed Brewster Bears from the Caribou Trail League in a loser-out, winner-to-state District 6/7 Regional volleyball contest.

The Lady Eagles started out slowly, and the Bears came out tough. The Eagles couldn't find their rhythm until late in the first game - rallying from a 10 to 18 deficit - and only losing 23 to 25. The team found their confidence and played strongly in the the second game, winning 25 to 11, tying the match at one game a piece. The Bears tried to battle back in the third game, but the Eagles held them off 25 to 21. The Lady Eagles knew they had to shut the Bears down in the fourth game.

In resounding fashion and proving that their number one seed was no fluke, Lakeside pounded the Bears by a score of 25 to 4 - a RARE margin of victory in rally scoring. Number one Lakeside downed number three Brewster, but the notable feat of the day was how Lakeside rebounded from being down after game one and won three straight, earning a trip to the WIAA State 1A Volleyball Tournament slated for November 14-15, in Yakima, Washington.

Cami Alexander led the Eagles with 15 kills and 7 aces. Heather Hesselgesser, Leslie Stillar, and Alex Daggy each added 7 kills a piece in the offensive category. Sara Moffatt led defensively with 20 digs. Heather Hesselgesser and Leslie Stillar both chipped in 12 digs a piece, while Alex Daggy added 2 blocks.

The Eagles head into the 1A Tournament riding a 4-match win streak and look to come home with more hardware to proudly display in the volleyball trophy cases! Good luck girls!

Lakeside Volleyball FIRST in League, Districts

Lady Eagles Earn the League and District Crowns

After winning the NEA league championship just a week and a half before, the Lakeside varsity volleyball team traveled to West Valley High School on a quest to earn themselves a district title as well. First up were the Grizzlies from Newport. The last time the Lady Eagles met the Grizzlies, they were given their first league defeat. Lakeside was not going to allow a repeat. The Eagles came out swinging with revenge in sight and won the match in three games with scores of 25-19, 25-14, and 25-22. Cami Alexander led the Eagles with 10 kills and a block, Leslie Stillar had 6 digs and 2 serving aces, and Lexie Zappone headed up the assists category with 16. Lakeside now advanced to the district title game against the winner of the Freeman vs. Kettle Falls district match.

Much like the league championship match a week and a half before, it was a Freeman vs. Lakeside match up in the district title game. The Eagles took advantage of the Scotties’ mistakes in the first game and got the win 25-21. Freeman proved to want it just as much as they came back with numerous kills and blocks from Freeman middle Carley Heinen and won the second game of the match 22-25. Lakeside capitalized on large momentum late in the third game to pull out an exciting 28-26 win. Freeman wasn’t going without a fight. They took advantage of Lakeside’s mistakes early and never looked back as they knocked off the Eagles 20-25 in the fourth game, sending the championship match into a deciding fifth game. This title game proved to be as exciting as ever as the Scotties and Eagles played neck-and-neck throughout most of the game. The Lady Eagles were down 7-11 at one point and decided it was time to turn it around. They tied it up at 11-11.Each team traded points from there to a 15-15 tie. After a hitting error by Freeman, the Lady Eagles were up 16-15 with match point. With a Lakeside kill for the final point, the Lady Eagles were district champions. Cami Alexander led again in kills with 14, Alexander and Alex Daggy both had 2 blocks a piece, and Lexie Zappone had 24 assists. Sara Moffatt and Leslie Stillar both chipped in 17 digs, with Stillar and Zappone also serving up two aces. The Lady Eagles earned themselves an impressive district title. Congratulations girls!

Please plan on cheering on the Eagles at the District 6/7 Volleyball Regionals in Moses Lake this coming Saturday, November 8th at 11:00.

Lakeside Volleyball Team Stages an Amazing Comeback

The Lakeside Volleyball team headed to Freeman on Wednesday night, October 22, in hopes of capturing the NEA League Title. Both teams had only lost once during league play. Freeman's loss was to the Eagles in the first round.

Freeman came out on fire. It was the Scotties' senior night, and everything seemed to be going their way. The Eagles remained calm and patient. The Eagles found themselves down two games to none. The league title race looked bleak, but the Eagles dug in and took control of game three. Having the momentum on their side, the Eagles grabbed the fourth game too. It was two games to two.

The fifth game was a nail-biter. The Eagles were down most of the fifth game but stayed within two points of the Scotties until they were able to tie the score at 10-10. It was tied again at 13-13 when Lakeside took advantage of an error by a Freeman hitter and then ended the match 15-13 with a kill by Cami Alexander. The Eagles had refused to lose and found themselves the League Champions.

The Eagles had impressive play by the whole team that night, but some of the highlights were Cami Alexander with 20 kills and 13 assists while Lexie Zappone had 22 assists. Alex Daggy added 9 kills and 4 blocks. Sara Moffatt led the defense with 32 digs, and Brandi Mahoney served 24 for 24.

Congratulations to the Lady Eagles.

LAKESIDE CLINCHES 1ST!

Taking a lesson from Newport's victory over them in front of a home crowd the night before, the Lakeside volleyball squad dropped the first two sets at Freeman before taking the next two and the tie-breaker to win the Northeast A League title with a league record of 7-1. With the loss at home, Freeman dropped to 5-2 in league, with their final game of the regular season on the road at Jenkins High School in Chewelah tonight.

The Scotties blasted the Lady Eagles 25-16 in the first set and eeked out a win in the second 25-23. But Head Coach Kara Moffatt's crew would not go down without a fight, rallying to win the next two 25-18 and 25-16 and bringing the match down to the fifth set tie breaker -- first to 15, win by 2. And that is just what the Lady Eagles did at gut check time, winning the tie breaker set, match and the league championship by a score of 15-13.

The on fire Alexander had a match-leading 20 kills and 2 digs, while Moffatt led all defensive efforts with 31 digs.

Newport tops Lakeside in volleyball marathon

The Lakeside varsity volleyball team ended up on the losing side of a 5 set match against Newport last night at home, but remains in first place in league play with a 6-1 record. The Lady Eagles are now 8-4 overall going into their final match of the regular season against second place Freeman tonight on the road. Freeman is 5-1 in league, 6-6 overall after falling to 2B dominator and former NEA member Colfax Monday night in 3 straight sets, 11-25, 13-25 and 12-25.

Lakeside made Newport earn the win, taking the first set 25-23 and controlling the second 25-15. Newport roared back, taking the next two 25-20 and 25-21. Newport then sealed the match with the tie breaker fifth set, 15-10.

With a win tonight, Lakeside can still clinch the NEA league title with a 7-1 record. Freeman, with a loss tonight, could do no better than 6-2 to finish the season, should they then beat Chewelah in their final game Thursday night. With a Lakeside loss tonight, Freeman would control their own destiny, leaving Lakeside at their mercy -- a following Freeman loss at Chewelah would result in a tie for 1st place between Lakeside and Freeman at 6-2, but a following win at Chewelah would make Freeman the league champ at 7-1.

Good luck, Lakeside Lady Eagles!

League-leading Lakeside ladies

Lakeside's varsity volleyball team sits alone atop Northeast A League standings this week with a 6-0 record heading into Tuesday night's 7pm home match against league 1-5 Newport.

The Lady Eagles are 8-3 overall after tangling with a couple of scrappy Idaho squads in Priest River and St Maries, and falling to former 1A nemesis Colfax, which is now dominating the 2B classification with an 11-0 undefeated season so far, 8-0 in the Bi-County 1B/2B League. NEA's Chewelah and Freeman were also beaten by Colfax this year. Freeman is in second place in league with a 5-1 record, 6-5 overall.

Newport, 6-6 overall, beat Priest River twice in non-league matches this season.

Lady Eagles take 7th place at STATE!

Seventh at State

The Lakeside Eagle Volleyball team qualified for the State 1A Tournament by defeating Okanogan in three games, Chelan in five games, and losing a thrilling five-game match to Colfax at the Regional Tournament. The Eagles had been swept in three games by the Bulldogs in previous meetings. It only proved to the Eagles that they had made great progress during the season. The Eagles earned the second seed to State.

Being the young team that they were, the Eagles proved to be a little nervous in the first game with Annie Wright High School. It was a close game, but the Eagles pulled ahead in the end. Once the nervous jitters were out of the way, the Eagles dominated the next two games and swept Annie Wright in three games.

The win set up the Eagles with a match-up with Connell in the quarterfinals. The Eagles stormed ahead and beat Connell convincingly in the first two games. Connell was very hard to defend because they were very unpredictable, and they didn’t seem to have a rhythm, which really confused the Eagles. They weren’t your basic pass, set, and hit team. They would tip you to death or randomly shoot it over on the second hit to anywhere on the court. Connell had ten seniors, and when their backs were against the wall, they came out battling. The Eagles lost the next three games to Connell. They just couldn’t get the momentum back. The Lady Eagles were devastated. The Eagles could now place no higher than fourth, but to even get into the trophy matches, they had to play Onalaska. This was a loser-out match.

The Lady Eagles only had a short time to regroup after their loss to Connell. They had to regain composure and forge ahead. The Eagles were very angry at themselves for the loss to Connell, and it showed on the court against Onalaska. They showed no mercy for the Loggers. They swept them in three games. Kelli Tikker led the Eagles with 14 kills, 4 blocks, and 12 digs. Lauryn Bassen added 18 assists. The Eagles were now guaranteed a trophy.

The Eagles played their final match against a tough Cedar Park Christian team and they never seemed to get into a rhythm, and they lost in three. The Eagles finished seventh and took home a trophy. Many were disappointed because there was a feeling that we could have done so much more. The quarterfinal loss against Connell took a lot of heart out of the team, and they tried very hard to battle back, but I think they found it difficult to shake off.
Kelli Tikker led the Eagles against Cedar Park Christian with 17 kills and 3 blocks. Sara Moffatt added 17 digs, and Cami Alexander dished up 17 assists.

In the five-game match with Connell, Kelli Tikker had 28 kills and 4 blocks, and Aleesha Denney added 17 kills and 4 blocks. Lauryn Bassen led the assist category with 31 assists, and Leslie Stillar added 23 digs.

This was a team that started the season with only four returners. This was supposed to be a building year for Lakeside Volleyball, but this team proved to be so much more. It took a lot of hard work and dedication from this very young team. They accomplished things that no one ever thought that they would achieve. Congratulations to the 2007 Lady Eagles Volleyball team.

Lakeside Volleyball News for the week of October 15, 2007

Lakeside Volleyball News for the week of October 15, 2007

Lakeside VS Newport - The Eagles started the week off traveling to Newport to meet the Grizzlies. It was Senior Night in Newport and the emotions were high. The Eagles knew that they had to play well because the Grizzlies came to battle. The Eagles came out strong. They won the first two games 25-18, 25-22. The Eagles started struggling in the third game with communication and found themselves down at times, by at least eight points. At one point it was 0-7 and 8-16. The Eagles roared back but lost the game 17-25. The Eagles were not happy with their performance in the third game. They came back stronger then ever and won the fourth game 25-13. Kelli Tikker led the team with 10 kills. Cami Alexander had 17 assists and 3 aces. Alessha Denney and Sara Moffatt led the defense. Aleesha Denney had a season high of 8 blocks and Sara Moffatt added 15 digs.

Lakeside VS Colfax – This match had everything on the line. Colfax had not lost a league match this year. The Eagles had only lost one and that was to the Bulldogs in the first round. This match was for the league title. This was also Senior Night for the Eagles. The Eagles are graduating three talented volleyball players. They are Kelli Tikker, Aleesha Denney, and Gillian Charboneau. Kelli Tikker will be playing volleyball for Gonzaga University next year. Aleesha Denney is being looked at by several colleges and Gillian Charbonneau will be hanging up her volleyball shoes and attending Eastern Washington University. The match between the Bulldogs and Eagles was a great match. Every point was backed up and answered with a point from the other team. Neither team ever led by more than two points until the third game of the match. Lakeside fell to the Bulldogs 23-25, 23-25, and 19-25. Kelli Tikker had 17 kills. Lauryn Bassen led in the assist column with 17 assists. Aleesha Denney had 3 blocks and 2 aces for the Eagles. Sara Moffatt added 16 digs.

Lady Eagles continue their run...

Lakeside Volleyball News for the week of October 2, 2007

Lakeside at Freeman - On October 2, 2007 the Lady Eagles traveled to Freeman to meet the Scotties. The Scotties started out with a strong block against the Eagles. The Eagles made some adjustments to their offense and they never looked back. The Eagles were very tough that night. They swept the Scotties in three games. Kelli Tikker led the Eagles with 10 kills. Leslie Stillar added three aces. Sara Moffatt led the defense with 15 digs and Alex Daggy led in the blocking category with 3 blocks. This match completed the first round of league. The Eagles only lost one league match in the first round and that was to Colfax.

Lakeside at Kettle Falls – On October 4, 2007 the Eagles traveled to Kettle Falls but with great apprehension. The Eagles had lost two starters due to injuries the day before. The team had to change offenses and they didn’t even get to practice the change. The injuries were to Kelli Tikker and Gillian Charbonneau, two starting seniors for the Eagles. That left the Eagles with a very young team being led by Aleesha Denney, the lone healthy senior. The first game proved to be a challenge for the Eagles. There was naturally a lot of confusion but once the Eagles settled down, they began to roll. There were a lot of good performances and the younger players really stepped up. The Eagles beat Kettle Falls 3 games to 1. Leslie Stillar led the team with 21 kills. Lauryn Bassen added 44 assists. Aleesha Denney had 4 aces. Sara Moffatt led in the dig category with 19 digs. Heather Hesselgesser had a big game with 18 digs and no missed serves.

Priest River at Lakeside – On October 6, 2007 the Eagles hosted Priest River for a non-league match up. We welcomed back Kati Tikker, coach of the Spartans. The Eagles played the Spartans the week before in Priest River. The Spartans had taken the match to 5 games. The Eagles eventually won but it was a hard fought battle. The Eagles still had Gillian Charbonneau and Kelli Tikker out for injuries. Lakeside started out very slow. They seemed to still be confused with the new line-up and positions. The Spartans won the first game 24-26. The Eagles came back in the second game and won 25 – 19. They took the third and fourth games 25-23, 27-25. They beat the Spartans 3-1. Aleesha Denney had 8 aces, 15 kills, and 3 blocks to lead the Eagles. Cami Alexander led in the dig category with 22 digs. Leslie Stillar added 16 kills and Lauryn Bassen had 36 assists in their win over the Spartans. This concluded a very successful week for the Lady Eagles.

Volleyball games vs. Colfax, Newport and Priest River

Lakeside Volleyball News for the week of September 24, 2007.

On Tuesday, September 25, 2007, the Lady Eagles met the Colfax Bulldogs for the first time this year. The Eagles lost to Colfax in the State 1A Championship last year, and that was the last time the Eagles and Bulldogs faced on the volleyball court. The Eagles knew that the Bulldogs were going to be tough this year. The Bulldogs graduated only a few players from their state championship team, while the Lady Eagles graduated all but four players.

The Eagles had been playing well all year. The only loss that they had was to King’s in the Sundome Tournament on September 7, 2007. (King’s finished third last year at the State 1A Tournament.) But when the Eagles met Colfax, the girls never seemed to get into their rhythm. They struggled throughout the match and were very disappointed with their performance. They lost in three straight games. The scores were 20-25, 11-25, and 20-25. This was the Eagles’ first league loss.

The team rallied back on Thursday, September 27, when they met the Newport Grizzlies. The Eagles started out strong and won the first game 25-12. The second game they remained tough and won 25-16. The third game found the Eagles struggling with communication on the floor, which resulted in a loss of 20-25. The team pulled together and won the fourth game and match with a score of 25–15. Kelli Tikker led the team with 14 kills and 18 digs. Cami Alexander added 11 more kills. Lauryn Bassen led the setting category with 23 assists. Aleesha Denney had 3 blocks and 4 aces. Sara Moffatt added 15 digs.

The week finished with the Eagles traveling to Priest River in a non-league match-up with the Spartans. There were many reasons why the Eagles were looking forward to this match-up. The Spartans coach is first-year Head Coach Kati Tikker, Kelli’s sister. Kati was a 2002 Lakeside grad and starting middle blocker (MB) on the three-time State Championship volleyball teams of 1999, 2000, and 2001. As a coach (and I’m sure Kelli felt the same way), it was very different being on the opposite side of the net competing against Kati instead of with her. Kati has done an excellent job with the Spartans as it was a very competitive match.

The Eagles won the match after taking the match to five games. The Eagles started out slow, losing the first game 18-25. They rebounded and won the next two games 25-18 and 25-23. The Spartans came back and took the fourth game 18-25. The fifth and final game the Eagles came out tough and never really let the Spartans back in. They won 15-9. Kelli Tikker led the Eagles with 21 kills and 4 aces. Alex Daggy had a personal season-high with 6 blocks, which led all players against Priest River in the blocking category. Leslie Stillar led the team in digs with 26, and Lauryn Bassen chipped in 17 assists.

The Eagles have 11 wins and 2 losses for the season.

The Lady Eagles travel to Colfax

Tuesday night, September 25, our Eagles traveled to Colfax to face the undefeated Bulldogs. Unfortunately, we left with our first league loss. Colfax, 4 time State 1A champs, played strong volleyball and took the Eagles in three games: 20-25, 11-25, and 20-25. The Eagles rallied during the third game and were ahead for most of the game, but the Bulldogs turned the score at the end.
Tonight, the Eagles host the Newport Grizzlies. The JV game starts at 5:30, and the Varsity game begins at 7:00.

Lady Eagles defeat visiting St. Maries

Saturday, September 22, the Lakeside Eagles hosted the Lumberjacks from St Maries, ID. It was exciting volleyball as the Eagles won the 1st game 25-20. The Lumberjacks rallied and won both the 2nd and 3rd games with a score of 18-25 in both games. The Eagles however, regrouped and won the 4th game 25-10. In the 5th and final game, the Eagles managed to do their best and win the game 15-12, after sitting tied at 11-11. It was exciting volleyball right to the end, and we are very proud of our Eagles!
The Lady Eagles are currently undefeated, except for a loss to King's in the championship game at the Yakima Tournament on September 7, 2007.
Please join us Tuesday night when your Eagles will face the Bulldogs in Colfax. The JV game starts at 5:30, and the Varsity game starts at 7:00.
