Lakeside XC boys and girls both take 4th place at state!

After seeing several key seniors from last year's 1A state championship team graduate last spring, the Lakeside cross country boys returned to the podium at the 2009 state meet last Saturday, November 4th to accept a 4th place trophy after a strong follow up race by a young group of harriers.

The Lady Eagles cross country team also won a 4th place trophy, repeating their achievement of a year ago, which was the first state placing of any girls' cross country team at Lakeside in its history. Only the top 4 XC teams take home a trophy from the state meet.

The boys were paced by junior Colton Berry, who finished 10th overall in 17:01, followed by junior Ryan Rojeski (20 17:30), senior Craig Besel (43 18:00), senior Kyle Koch (63 18:22) and freshman Cody Constant (81 18:39). Junior Kyle Stout and freshman Mitchell Middleton bolstered the Lakeside effort.

Nooksack Valley won the 1A boys team title, followed by Port Townsend and Seattle Christian.

Senior XC newcomer Kenna Middleton led the Lady Eagles, coming in an amazing 4th overall in 19:48 (missing the National Silver Elite standard by only :03 secs!). She was followed by senior veteran Evangeline Rehwaldt (15 20:36), 2008 state 1st alternate sophomore Vanessa Ahrendt (26 21:20), freshman Sofie Marikis (63 22:24) and sophomore veteran Morganne McCann (69 22:37). The team points earners were supported by seniors Kendra Lahue and Jenny Reeder.

Needless to say, both Lakeside girls and boys finished the final 1A coaches' poll ranked 4th in the state.

Great job, Eagles harriers! Way to bring home the hardware two years in a row!

American Rift Valley article at dyestat.com

With Lakeside High School's boys cross country state championship fresh in mind, combined with the GSL 3A North Central's rise to a US #1 ranking and subsequent dominating 3A state championship win, it would be a good time to reflect on the overall "running culture" that has developed over the last several decades in the greater Spokane area:

From dyestat.com, the premier on-line home of high school xc and track & field:

For decades, Spokane, Washington has been known as a hotbed of American distance running. From Olympic-level competitors to high school cross country dynasties, Spokane has produced a steady stream of top-shelf talent since the days of Gerry Lindgren. So strong have the boys teams, in particular, been over the years, that Spokane has earned the nickname of "American Rift Valley" in certain circles. How to explain the persistent, deep, constantly replenishing pool of talent from this one mid-sized city, tucked away in a corner of the country?

Dyestat's assistant editor Dave Devine at dyestat.com interviews the most noteable names in the history of local high school running. A very interesting 2-part article; read it here:

Flu strikes #3 X-C girls

The flu bug has attacked the Lakeside girls cross country team as they prepare to head to Pasco tomorrow for the State Championship meet, freshly upgraded to a #3 statewide ranking in the coaches poll for the week of November 3rd. King's girls remain at #1, followed by La Center at #2. Former #3 Nooksack Valley dropped to #6, while Bellevue Christian takes over the #4 spot from the Lady Eagles, who spent most of the season at #10.

Lakeside boys remain the #1 ranked XC team in state, followed by Charles Wright Academy, King's and Caribou Trail League Chelan. CTL's Cashmere is ranked #6.

According to Head Coach Steve Olson, Lakeside girls harriers have never brought home hardware from the state meet in the history of the school, but he had been optimistic this season's young squad had a chance to break that drought. Trophies are presented to the top four team finishers.

Get well, ladies, and have a great run at State this Saturday!

X-C girls jump to #4

The Lakeside varsity girls cross country team has joined the boys in the top five of the 1A Coaches Poll for the week of October 27. Heading into championship week, the Lady Eagles were voted #4 in state after spending most of the 2008 season at #10 (one week at #9), while Lakeside boys remain the #1 1A team in state as ranked by the Washington State high school cross country coaches association. King's girls, winners of last year's championship, remain the #1 1A XC team in the state, followed by La Center and Nooksack Valley.

The boys visit Wenatchee Thursday for a Regional meet with the Caribou Trail League, hoping to secure one of the three combined District 6/7 allocations to the state meet in Pasco November 8th. District 7 did not combine allocations with District 6 on the girls side, so Lakeside girls are going to state on the single NEA allocation.

Good luck at Regionals, boys harriers!

Boys slighted at Bullpup; win small school anyway

The Bullpup Invite officiating crew erroneously presented the second place trophy in the small school (2A and below) division to the Lakeside varsity boys cross country team at the awards ceremony following the Gonzaga Prep-hosted meet on Saturday, October 11th at Finch Arboretum, even though the Eagles had earned enough points for first place.

Lakeside Coach Steve Olson sprang into action when the counting mistake was discovered, bravely boarding the Colville High School team bus to retrieve the winner's trophy rightfully belonging to his own squad as it was about to drive off with the booty.

Lakeside Sr Josh Alexander was properly awarded the 7th place individual medal, as he out-paced all Lakeside runners with a time of 17:11. Sr Austin Stuchell was the second Eagle to cross the line, coming in 11th overall with a time of 17:17 and missing out on a medallion by 1 second to Colville's second finisher, Ned Fischer, in a case of turn about fair play. Josh had beaten the first Colville runner, Jake Hastings, also by just 1 second. Mt Spokane's Allan Schroeder won the race with a time of 16:21.

Sr Paul Lewis finished 27th out of 144 varsity boys with a time of 17:43, followed by So Colton Berry (32nd - 17:52), So Ryan Rojeski (48th - 18:22), Jr Craig Besel (56th - 18:44) and Sr Chris Thompson (77th - 19:22).

Lakeside boys finished the varsity meet with 125 points, to 2A Colville's 138 and 2A Riverside's 142. A host of other small schools came in with scores ranging from Reardan's 331 to Potlach's 677, including Lakeside's fellow NEA league members Freeman (332) and Newport (493).

The Lakeside boys came in 5th overall, behind regional powerhouses 3A Mt Spokane (1st overall with 77 points), 4A Gonzaga Prep (2nd - 81), 4A Central Valley (3rd - 98) and 5A (ID) Coeur d'Alene (4th - 100). The three top big school teams were awarded trophies, while only 1st and 2nd place trophies were awarded in the small school category.

Varsity girls, who placed 6th overall, would have brought home the third place trophy in the small school category had there been one, as they came in with 141 points behind Riverside's 84, good for 2nd place overall, and Colville's 92, good for 3rd place overall. Central Valley came in 1st overall, while Coeur d'Alene was 4th with 94 and Gonzaga Prep was 5th with 123. NEA member Freeman was 9th with 292 points, despite the Scotties' Mackenzie DeRuyter taking home the 8th place individual medal.

Coeur d'Alene's Kinsey Gomez showed her defending Idaho state 5A championship form in running away from the rest of the field early in the contest, coming in at 19:19, 1 minute 9 seconds faster than Alicia Doohan, the second place finisher from Gonzaga Prep.

Jr Evangeline Rehwaldt once again led all Lakeside varsity girl runners, crossing the line 13th overall with a time of 21:28. The second Lakeside finisher out of 89 runners, So Hailee Ramsey, came in 20th, with a time of 21:53, followed by Sr Gina Sprint (26th - 22:33), So Kasey Rubosky (40th - 23:17), Jr Tasha Britton (42nd - 23:19), Fr Morganne McCann (43rd - 23:23) and Fr Vanessa Ahrendt (47th - 23:30). After crossing the finish line behind two Riverside runners, Vanessa insisted, "I would have passed them (on the final sprint), but the (second) one moved over and cut me off." [edited quote for accuracy 10-20-08]

Jr varsity girls finished 4th overall (out of 8) with 172 points, behind Central Valley (34 points), Coeur d'Alene Charter (73) and Gonzaga Prep (89), while also beating the enormous jv contingent from Lewis & Clark (5th - 234) by 62 points. JV boys placed 12th overall (out of 15) with 436 points.

Jimmy Spencer placed 29th out of 74 runners with a time of 13:03 as the only Lakeside Eagle entered in the 2 mile Freshman boys race, while lone Eagle Paris Hochhalter came in 24th out of 41 runners with a time of 16:46 in the Freshman girls race.

Seniors Day: X-C league update

The Lakeside cross country team members have battled not only the competition but also themselves in the three 2008 dual league meets they've faced so far, including at yesterday's "Senior Day" meet against Freeman. [edited for accuracy 10-29-08]

Lakeside seniors Josh Alexander, Paul Lewis and Austin Stuchell typically end up racing each other for the first three spots in league events, with Josh breaking the proverbial tape in yesterday's home meet at Sontag Park and Austin taking 1st against Kettle Falls at Kettle Falls on 9/23. No results report can be found at SpokesmanReview.com for the Newport dual at Sontag Park September 30th, and this reporter doesn't remember which senior won that race as they pass through the chute in a big blur. Other seniors on the XC boys squad include Chris Thompson, Jesse Schimke and Sean Armstrong.

Aside from consistent #1 Lakeside runner Jr Evangeline Rehwaldt, varsity girls have also been battling each other fiercely for position during league meets, as well as having to endure strong pushes from a number of promising junior varsity runners, most noteably junior Tasha Britton, who ran varsity flight #3 at Sunfair and came in 4th yesterday, and freshman Vanessa Ahrendt, who nudged into the 7th Lakeside runner spot in the Freeman meet.

This year's girls varsity squad is a young group, having on board freshman Morganne McCann, as well as sophomores Hailee Ramsey and Kasey Rubosky, since beginning its season. The two varsity seniors Gina Sprint and Rachael Sugden were honored at an after-meet BBQ, along with the seniors from the boys side.

Jenkins High School is the last league meet for the Eagles, to be run at Chewelah Tuesday, October 14th. Boys District meet will be held October 30th, again at Chewelah, and girls District meet is the following Saturday, November 1st at Plantes Ferry Complex in the Spokane Valley.

These district meets cannot be taken lightly, as only one Northeast 1A boys and one NEA girls entry will be going to state in 2008. In 2009, the Northeast 1A league gets 2 entries each, boys and girls, going to state.

This year the 1A State Cross Country Championships will be held at Sun Willows Golf Course, Pasco, Washington Saturday, November 8th. Last year's championships were won by the Royal boys and the King's girls. Lakeside boys placed second.

X-C boys rocket to #1 in state coaches poll!

The Lakeside varsity boys cross country team jumped from #5 to #1 in the 2008 Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association poll #5 for the week of October 6th, thanks to fantastic showings in their past three major events, including last Saturday's 17th overall placing at the Sunfair Invite in Yakima.

Varsity girls also remained in the 1A top ten, dropping one spot from their 1 week stint at #9.

Port Townsend was kicked completely out of the top ten when Lakeside took over its previous #1 ranking.

This seems like a possible oversight, however, as the "Redskins" possess the talents of sophomore Bereket Piatt, winner of the 2008 Sunfair Sophomore boys race with a time of 16:59.6 (and who would probably have easily broken the course record of 16:32 for that event had he not gone around the tennis courts for a second time on lap 2), and Quinton Decker, who was one of the 7 runners in Boys Varsity Flight 7 (#1 runner) to come in under 16 minutes.

XC boys 3rd at Sunfair!

Lakeside varsity boys cross country squad took home the 3rd place trophy out of 19 teams in the combined 2A/1A/2B/1B division of the Sunfair Invite in Yakima Saturday, October 4th, 2008, while also placing a strong 17th overall out of 59 entries.

In an awesome individual effort, Lakeside senior Josh Alexander took 3rd place in his varsity flight #5 (#3 runner), with a time of 16:45.0, just 14.4 seconds off the leader's mark. Josh was one of 59 runners in his race. In another Lakeside top finish, sophomore Ryan Rojeski collected 11 points with his 12th place finish in boys varsity flight #3, with a time of 17:30.5.

Lakeside varsity girls placed 7th out of 9 in the 2A/1A/2B/1B division, and 32nd overall out of 40 schools. Lakeside freshman Vanessa Ahrendt also placed 11th in the non-team scoring Frosh girls race out of 69 girls, with a time of 14:21.1 over a 2 mile course. All other races entered by Lakeside runners were 3 miles in length.

The boys scored 146 with the following varsity points: Flight 1 (#7 runner, Sr Chris Thompson, 45th/60 19:59.3) - 43; Flight 2 (#6 runner, Jr Craig Besel, 17th/64 18:02.3) - 17; Flight 3 (#5 runner, So Ryan Rojeski, 12th/63 17:30.5) - 11; Flight 4 (#4 runner, So Colton Berry, 17th/61 17:24.7) - 16; Flight 5 (#3 runner, Sr Josh Alexander, 3rd/59 16:45.0) - 3; Flight 6 (#2 runner, Sr Austin Stuchell, 31st/55 17:20.8) - 29; Flight 7 (#1 runner, Sr Paul Lewis 29th/47 16:59.9) - 27.

Lakeside girls scored 203 with the following varsity points: Flight 1 (#7 runner, Sr Rachael Sugden, 37th/50 24:12.9) - 30; Flight 2 (#6 runner, Fr Morgan McCann, 33rd/51 23:14.1) - 27; Flight 3 (#5 runner, Jr Tasha Britton, 30th/52 22:28.8) - 25; Flight 4 (#4 runner, So Kasey Rubosky, 37th/46 22:46.9) - 31; Flight 5 (#3 runner, Sr Gina Sprint, 33rd/44 22:12.4) - 30; Flight 6 (#2 runner, So Hailee Ramsey, 31st/36 21:24.6) - 29; Flight 7 (#1 runner, Jr Evangeline Rehwaldt, 34th/37 21:21.2) - 31. (The reason lower points could be awarded than the place the runner came in is because runners from teams that did not enter at least 5 varsity runners were skipped over in the place point scoring.)

Other Lakeside runners participating in non-team scoring races were Kendra Lahue (80th/265 23:44.8) in the crowded Junior Varsity girls race, Kyle Stoudt (49th/263 19:01.9) and Tucker Fitzpatrick (129th/263 20:41.8) in the equally crowded Sophomore Boys race, and Jesse Schimke (57th/106 20:12.6) in the Senior Boys race.

Farragut Invitational X-C

Lakeside's varsity boys and junior varsity girls cross country teams both took first place in their divisions at the Farragut/Super 1 Invite Saturday, September 20, 2008, while varsity girls came in a close second in their division. Junior varsity boys placed a respectable 5th behind strong teams from Coeur d'Alene, Lake City, Sandpoint and East Valley. Lake City hosted.

Lakeside X-C newbies Vanessa Ahrendt (Fr) and Tasha Britton (Jr) placed 1st and 2nd in the combined junior varsity race -- closely followed by juniors Cate Graman, Jessica Reeves and Jennelle Woll at 8, 14 and 15 -- to help their squad blow away the rest of the field with 24 points and an average time of 27:08.6. Coach Steve Olson said he thought this was the first time in Lakeside cross country history jv girls had come in 1 and 2 in a major meet.

Vanessa broke the tape with a 25:42.8 and Tasha raced down the final slope at her teammate's heels finishing with a 25:45.4 on the winding, hilly course overlooking scenic Lake Pend Oreille that features the grueling Goat Hill. "The girl right behind us got to the top (of Goat Hill) and (threw up)," Tasha informed her teammates after the race.

Sandpoint's jv girls came in second with 50 points and a 29:02.6 average, followed by Coeur d'Alene with 86 and a 31:24.7.

Lakeside varsity boys took the top spot in the B division with their 35 points and an average time of 18:24.8, beating all varsity A squads except A winner Coeur d'Alene, which grabbed 20 points in an average 18:11.4 time. Lake City was second in A (third overall) with 49 points, followed by Sandpoint, Lakeland and Post Falls with 97, 99 and 104. B division 2 and 3 Logos and Timberlake both scored 81. Lakeside's NEA rivals Newport and Chewelah took the 7th and 8th team B spots with 181 and 235 points.

Senior Josh Alexander paced the Lakeside varsity with a 4th place overall finish at 17:49.8, followed closely by seniors Paul Lewis and Austin Stuchell, who took 7th and 8th individually. Sophomore Colton Berry took the 11th spot overall to help his team to its powerful second place overall finish.

Varsity girls' 47 points, behind Timberlake's 44, gave them second place in B division, 4th overall. Lake City and Coeur d'Alene took the 1 and 2 spots in A division with scores of 35 and 45. Junior Evangeline Rehwaldt led the Lakeside squad with a 22:36.0 time and 13th place overall.

The Lakeside cross country teams joined Washington, Idaho and Montana powerhouses at the Silverwood Coaster Cross September 13th to start the 2008 season.

Bozeman of Montana won both the boys and girls varsity fields with 78 and 53 points respectively. Runners from Lake City, Coeur d'Alene and Bozeman were one, two and three in the boys individual results, while the girls were led by runners from Coeur d'Alene (sophomore Kinsey Gomez, Idaho defending 5A state champion), Bozeman (sophomore Heidi Turner, 2007 Montana state champion) and Lake City.
